final

Start of the 400 m hurdles final

August 9, 2017, 9:33 p.m. local time (10:33 p.m. CEST )

The situation before this final was a little different than at most of the World Championships and Olympic Games in recent years. There were no particularly outstanding athletes who could have run times well under 48 seconds. So the situation was pretty open and we could expect an exciting race. The top three runners in the last last and second last World Championships were not among the participants. The 2016 Olympic champion Kerron Clement from the USA had reached the final, but no longer had the high standard of performance of his strongest years. Nevertheless, as the fastest in the semi-finals, he was one of the favorites. This also included the Turkish Olympic third from 2016 and current European champion Yasmani Copello as well as the European champion from 2014 and EC third from 2016 Kariem Hussein from Switzerland. In the semifinals, the Norwegian Karsten Warholm also made a strong impression with the second fastest time and thus got into the conversation for the wider circle of favorites.

The final took place in cool and rainy outdoor conditions. Warholm started the race fastest. Halfway through the course, he led Copello and Abderrahman Samba from Qatar, who bravely kept up the pace. At the exit of the target curve, Warholm led with a lead of around three meters over Clement, Samba and Copello, who were pretty much on par. On the home stretch it got a bit tighter, especially Clement and Samba got closer to the Norwegian. But Copello was still doing well in the race. Samba touched the last hurdle lightly and then got completely out of rhythm. In the end, Karsten Warholm could not be ousted from the top and won the world title in 48.35 seconds. This time was to be valued highly in view of the difficult conditions. In the last few meters, Yasmani Copello passed Kerron Clement and secured the silver medal in front of the American, fifteen hundredths of a second behind the winner. The next runners crossed the finish line with a clear gap. Kemar Mowatt from Jamaica came fourth, Timothy Lamonte Holmes - often referred to as "TJ Holmes" - came in fifth ahead of Juander Santos from the Dominican Republic. Abderrahman Samba was seventh ahead of Kariem Hussein.
