ADI | Anti Detonation Injection, Water Injection |
explosion-proof injection; Injection of water or a water / ethanol mixture (50:50) (also water / methanol) into the cylinder of the internal combustion engine (power unit), usually only for a few minutes due to the high engine load - e.g. B. at the start to tickle even more power from the engine; Without ADI water injection, the engines heat up very strongly, which is the limiting operating parameter. For cooling, a rich fuel mixture is therefore injected into the cylinder without ADI injection in order to cool with the excess fuel - expensive but effective, which makes the fuel-air- Combustion ratio not optimal because it is too rich; with ADI cooling, the same amount of fuel is injected into the cylinders to obtain an optimal fuel-air ratio for optimal combustion; The ADI cools the cylinders from the inside - the additional (well-dosed) water injection (example: the Rolls-Royce Griffon engine requires 0.5 lbs of water for 1 lbs of fuel for ADI); ADI does not give the engine more power, but only allows a higher power setting without detonations (pre-ignition or misfire); the cooling comes from the evaporative cold of the water; the added alcohol facilitates and accelerates the cooling and prevents the water from freezing; ADI allows the mixture to be leaned from “maximum rich” to “best power setting”; was used for large piston-powered aircraft from World War II to 1950; ADI prevents pre-ignition due to the high boost pressure. |
