Malta (Carinthia)

With an area of 261.77 km², the municipality is the second largest in Carinthia (after Wolfsberg ). It takes up the majority of the Carinthian Malta Valley , which meets the Liesertal near Gmünd . It is bounded in the west by the Reisseck group , in the north and northwest by the main ridge of the Hohen Tauern with the Hochalmspitze ( 3360 m ) and the Großer Hafner ( 3076 m ), and in the east by the Rehreck . Since the Hohe Tauern National Park was expanded to include the Ankogel Group in 1987 , 8,570 hectares of the municipal area have been part of the National Park.

Most of the localities of the municipality are located on alluvial cones in the valley floor of the Malta .

Neighboring communities

The neighboring communities are in the north the community Rennweg am Katschberg and in the state of Salzburg the communities Muhr , Hüttschlag and Bad Gastein , in the east the community Gmünd in Carinthia , in the south the communities Trebesing and Reißeck , in the west the market community Obervellach and the community Mallnitz .

history

The area of today's municipality was already settled in pre-Roman times.

The place was mentioned in documents between 957 and 992 as "locus Malontina". In the 11th century the castle Ödenfest was built above the village , on which from the 12th century a sideline of the Counts of Heunburg sat, who also called themselves "Mallentheiner" after the name of the place. The castle was abandoned in the 14th century and fell into ruin.

The municipality of Malta was constituted in 1850 from the cadastral municipalities of Dornbach, Malta and Maltaberg and has not changed in its borders since then.

According to the 2001 census, Malta has 2185 inhabitants, 97.8% of whom are Austrian citizens. 66.3% of the population profess the Roman Catholic and 30.6% the Evangelical Church, 2.8% are without religious belief.

The painting procession from St. Peter / Rennweg to the Maria Hilf church takes place on the 2nd Sunday after Corpus Christi.

Tourist attractions are the Kölnbreinsperre , the Hohe Tauern National Park and the many waterfalls that have given the valley the nickname "Valley of the rushing waters", including the three Gößfalls and the highest waterfall in Carinthia, the Fallbach , which is about 200 meters into the district of Koschach Maltatal falls and can be climbed through the Fallbach via ferrata .

A waterfall in Brandstatt is known as a super humid ice climbing fall .

The Malta Valley since 2008 PES - mountaineering village and one of the most popular climbing areas in the Alps-Adriatic region. In the valley there are countless climbing gardens, bouldering areas and alpine climbing routes, which are described in the climbing guide Maltatal. The Maltatal climbing guide shows a total of 350 sport climbing routes, 80 multi-pitch routes, 200 boulders and 12 alpine routes.

In winter, the Maltatal and Gössgraben are popular ice climbing destinations . The ice climbing guide Osttirol and Oberkärnten lists 10 icefalls in the Gößgraben, 17 in the Vordern Maltatal, 15 in the Middle Maltatal and 7 in the Rear Maltatal. In 2016, some of them were closed by the creation of a controversial game rest zone from December 1st. until 31.3. blocked.

Buildings

Gothic parish church Maria Hilf Assumptio with walled-in Roman stone, vault paintings (15th century), frescoes on the choir walls (Epiphany, Mary in labor, Annunciation) from the 14th century, high altar from 1740; Early Gothic round barn (13th century) with crucifixion fresco (14th century). Another attraction is the Christopherus fresco on the outside wall of the parish church, which in the lower right part depicts a mythical creature similar to the well-known comic figure Mickey Mouse .
Former parsonage (built in the 16th century, renovated in 1984) is currently used as a wedding hall, exhibition hall and cemetery.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, the localities of today's municipality were characterized exclusively by agriculture, today tourism also plays an important role. There are more than 100,000 overnight stays in the municipality each year, with summer tourism dominating in the lower Malta Valley. The community is part of the Bergsteigerdörfer -Initiative of the PES .

Before 1961, the community had a seal with the Hochalmspitze as a motif, which, however, was never formally awarded and also did not comply with the heraldic rules.

Therefore, the shield of the Lords of Mallenthein was used as a model for a community coat of arms , who resided at Ödenfest Castle north of Malta. The first verifiable bearer of this name, Walther "de Malantin", is documented for 1129/30. The Mallenthein residents had three stars in their coat of arms from the 13th century, while the seal of the younger gentlemen of Mallenthein, which is preserved on several documents from the 15th century, always showed a ladder. The Mallentheiner no longer lived in the castle from around 1400, but worked as carers, civil servants or trades in various parts of Upper Carinthia until the Carinthian line of the family in the male line died out in 1768.

The coat of arms, which was awarded to the community on May 31, 1961, shows an upright golden ladder with five rungs in a blue shield. The flag is blue and yellow with an incorporated coat of arms.
