Location of Markelsbach in Much

Markelsbach is a district of the municipality of Much in the Rhein-Sieg district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Geographical location

Markelsbach is at an altitude of 184 to 199 m above sea level. NHN in the Bergisches Land nature park at the confluence of the stream of the same name with the Scheidbach. The B 56 passes the village. To the southeast is the hamlet of Pillenhof, to the northwest the hamlet of Scheid.

history

In 1885 Markelsbach had 16 households and 81 inhabitants. In 1910 a distinction was made between the districts of Ober- and Niedermarkelsbach.

Markelsbach was a knight's seat to which the Knippshof, today Markelsbach 35a, also belonged. Markelsbach was owned by Count Nesselrode (noble family) until 1817 . Today only the remains of the foundations of the ruins can be seen.

The name probably goes back to the von Markelsbach knightly family, who later called themselves von Allner after the Allner Castle near Hennef.

Mining

In the vicinity of Pillenhof, mining was carried out on the Antonius and Gertrudensegen mines. These belonged to the consolidated Nikolaus-Phönix mine since 1935 .
