Location of Marienfeld in Much

Marienfeld is a district of the municipality of Much in the Rhein-Sieg district in North Rhine-Westphalia . The Catholic Church of St. Mary of the Assumption is in Marienfeld .

history

Marienfeld's beginnings lie in a public school built in 1837. It was built near the Ortsiefen homestead as a “Ortsiefen school” for children from the area.

Years later, the desire arose to build a separate church for the school community . Tax inspector Johann Thelen from Strunkhausen took the initiative to build a church near the school by donating land for the church, rectory and cemetery and donating a considerable sum of money. At Thelen's suggestion, a church building association was founded, the members of which brought in a large sum for church building and performed manual and tensioning services . In 1864, with the approval of the church, construction began on the church around which a village was to be built. Thelen gave the planned village the name Marienfeld, which was approved by the government in Cologne in 1864 after an entry in the school chronicle .

In 1864, construction began on the first house, which was occupied in 1866. Instead of the previous name "Ortiefen School", the name Marienfeld prevailed from 1866 onwards. In 1869 a residential and commercial building followed, after which three more houses were built, which at the inauguration of the church “St. Assumption of Mary ”and the confirmation of Marienfeld as a parish . According to the cadastral map from 1828, updated to 1872, these five houses are shown apart from the church and school.

The parsonage and other houses followed, so that in a few years a village was built around the church and school, which, with its craftsmen and shops, became the center of the newly formed parish. A strong sense of togetherness developed, which was also reflected in the founding of associations, some of which still exist today.

Marienfeld belonged to the First World War in the occupation of the Rhineland as a border town of the right bank bridgehead Cologne to occupied territory. During the Second World War , the Heinrich Böll family moved into emergency accommodation in Marienfeld in the winter of 1944/45 ; a son was buried in the local cemetery.
