Marcus Schenkenberg (born August 4, 1968 in Solna near Stockholm ; real name Marcus Lodewijk Schenkenberg van Mierop ) is a Swedish top model of Dutch origin. He lives in the United States and is also a US citizen. He became famous in 1991 through the jeans campaign for Calvin Klein . Schenkenberg has been in the modeling business since 1990 and is still the best-paid male top model in the world. At times he was also active as an actor . In 2009 his name was expanded to become the Marcus Schenkenberg brand . The products include fragrance lines, a men's care line, jewelry, a fitness DVD and a bodywear collection.

Life

Childhood and discovery

Marcus Schenkenberg grew up with his two years older brother Michael in Stockholm. His interest in basketball began at the age of nine and he later played for the Solna youth team . A music teacher saw in him a musical talent and persuaded him to learn to play the violin , which Schenkenberg gave up again. During the summer vacation he worked at the Stockholm amusement park and saved the money for a trip to the USA . He graduated from school in economics. His dream was to play professional basketball in the NBA , but he didn't have a specific career goal. His parents imagined that he would work in a bank or become a doctor.

In 1987, Marcus Schenkenberg decided to gain new experience in the USA. On January 3, 1988, I set off for the United States with a very good friend. After stays and some jobs in New York , Orlando and New Orleans , he came to Los Angeles as an au pair . After a job as a dog sitter, he looked after the two children and the household in a family. During this time he began intensive fitness training and built up around 20 kg of muscle mass in just a few months in order to achieve his goal as a professional basketball player . Marcus Schenkenberg spent his free weekends in Venice Beach , where the 193 cm tall Swede was discovered by photographer Barry King in 1989 while roller skating. King suggested that he become a model and offered both screen tests and help finding an agency.

Model career

In 1990 he got a job as a model in Paris and after his stay in Europe came to New York in 1991, where he and the modeling agency Boss Models decided for each other, which was decisive for his further career. Schenkenberg was hired alongside Carré Otis for Calvin Klein's jeans campaign in San Francisco . The photos of the American photographer Bruce Weber marked the beginning of his career as a model . The campaign was published on a total of 116 pages for Vanity Fair magazine . In the same year, Marcus Schenkenberg was the first man to make it onto the cover of Harper's Bazaar magazine . In 1992, at the age of 24 and three years after his discovery, Schenkenberg was named one of the 50 Most Beautiful People by People Magazine .

Since the beginning of his modeling career, he has been booked for advertising campaigns and fashion shows by Calvin Klein, Gianni Versace , Karl Lagerfeld , Donna Karan , Ungaro , Iceberg , Wolfgang Joop and Philipp Plein , among others . Marcus Schenkenberg has appeared on the covers of various fashion magazines such as Harper's Bazaar, Vogue , Elle and other magazines. In February 2010, he was the first male model on the cover of the online fashion magazine Teaser Magazine . During his assignments, he had shoots with supermodels Claudia Schiffer , Naomi Campbell , Stephanie Seymour , Linda Evangelista , Cindy Crawford and Kate Moss, among others . Marcus Schenkenberg is the highest paid male top model in the world and is still under contract with agencies in New York, London and Paris around the world .
