The Massachusetts Department of Transportation ( MassDOT for short ), founded on November 1, 2009, is an agency of the state of Massachusetts in the United States . She is responsible for road maintenance, public transportation , aviation, and vehicle registration and registration throughout the state.

organization

The Massachusetts governor appoints the Secretary of Transportation , whose position is established as a staff position and who is also the agency's chief executive officer . The governor also appoints seven members to the board of directors who must approve key decisions. The agency's organizational chart shows other items.

Department of Highways

The Highway Division was formed from the earlier independent authorities Massachusetts Highway Department and Massachusetts Turnpike Authority . She is responsible for all interstate highways and state routes that are in the state's territory, particularly the Massachusetts Turnpike . There are few exceptions in locations where portions of State Routes are owned and administered by adjacent communities.

The department is also responsible for collecting the fees for all toll bridges and tunnels. These include the Sumner and Ted Williams tunnels and, since January 1, 2010, the Tobin Bridge . The MassDOT also already manages most of the road bridges in the Parks of the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR); the rest should also be transferred to the MassDOT by the end of 2014. Parts of Massachusetts Route 28 in Cambridge and Somerville , parts of Lynnway in Lynn , Middlesex Avenue in Medford , sections of Massachusetts Route 203 in Jamaica Plain and Dorchester, and Columbia Road in South Boston have already been transferred from the DCR to the MassDOT .

Motor vehicle registration department

The Registry of Motor Vehicles Division is the equivalent of the highway code in most other US states. It is mainly responsible for the registration of vehicles and for the issuing of driving licenses.

Public transport department

In Massachusetts, all local public transportation (PT) organizations are independent. However, the Board of Directors of MassDOT is identical to that of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), the largest provider of public transport connections in the Greater Boston metropolitan area .

In addition to the MBTA, there are another 15 public transport companies that are grouped under the term Regional Transit Agencies (RTAs). These mostly operate bus routes in the rest of the state.

The MassDOT is the responsible supervisory and planning authority and is responsible for both road and regional rail passenger transport. Long- distance passenger rail trains are operated by the state-owned Amtrak , while rail freight traffic is handled by private companies.

Aviation Department

The Aeronautics Division (formerly the Massachusetts Aeronautics Commission ) is primarily responsible for government funding for the airports . She also inspects and licenses airports and landing platforms, is responsible for airport security and flight safety as a whole, and is responsible for flight planning throughout the state. The MassDOT does not own any airports, instead the state-owned airports are controlled by the independent Massachusetts Port Authority , which shares its offices with the Aeronautics Division .

The Federal Aviation Administration is responsible for nationwide flight regulation in the United States . Control of passengers and baggage is the responsibility of the Transportation Security Administration , while airport security is the responsibility of local authorities.

Further subdivisions

The Office of Civil Rights develops guidelines and programs with reference to civil rights in the context of public transport and thus ensures that the MassDOT moves within the framework of the relevant requirements of the US federal government.

The Office for Transportation Planning uses, among other things, statistical analyzes to forecast the load on roads and railways and to be able to react accordingly. In addition, the department carries out various projects to improve transportation.

The Office of Real Estate & Asset Development is essentially responsible for generating income from state-owned land and buildings. For this purpose, among other things, leasing and license agreements are concluded with private companies.

The passenger routes, on the other hand, are predominantly in private hands.

In addition, the planning and supervisory functions of the Executive Office of Transportation as well as the Massachusetts Aeronautics Commission and the Registry of Motor Vehicles were taken over into the MassDOT . The Board of Directors of the MBTA was with that of the MassDOT merged, and finally the was Advisory Board of the MBTA, the budget veto withdrawn.
