The armed forces of Montenegro ( Montenegrin : Vojska Crne Gore) are the military of the state of Montenegro . The armed forces built up since 2006 comprise 1,600 soldiers and are now considered a functioning small army in Europe.

Montenegro has been a member of NATO and the association of armed forces on the Adriatic , the Adriatic Charter , since June 2017 .

history

Montenegro, which was part of Yugoslavia or the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro from 1918 to 2006 , regained its independence in May 2006 after a referendum. The present day army of Montenegro therefore emerged from the army corps of the armed forces of Serbia and Montenegro stationed in Podgorica . Since Serbia has no coast, the joint navy was completely taken over by Montenegro, but should be reduced to a coast guard . Montenegro has been a member of NATO since June 5, 2017.

modernization

Due to the accession to NATO, the Montenegrin Ministry of Defense plans to modernize the material used by 2025. A first step was the acquisition of three Bell 412 helicopters , which replaced the five Mil Mi-8T transport helicopters from the Soviet era . Furthermore, in October 2019, sixty-seven armored vehicles of the type Oshkosh JLTV were ordered in the United States ; these are to be equipped with remote-controlled weapon stations from the Israeli company Elbit Systems .
