Nõmme ( German  Nömme ) is a district of the Estonian capital Tallinn . The total area is 28 km². 35,463 people live in Nõmme (as of December 31, 2011).

location

Nõmme is located in the southwest of Tallinn, with the Mustamäe district in the north and the city limits in the south. To the east of Nõmme is Lake Ülemiste , northwest of Lake Harku . Until 1940 Nõmme was a separate town before it was incorporated into Tallinn.

Townships

The district is now divided into nine districts: Hiiu , Kivimäe , Laagri , Liiva , Männiku , Nõmme , Pääsküla , Rahumäe and Vana-Mustamäe .

Pääsküla is the oldest part of today's Nõmme and was first mentioned as a settlement in the 13th century in the Liber Census Daniæ .

Development

Nõmme mainly consists of old, detached houses from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Some of them are listed. Because of the many naturally grown trees and green spaces that the architects and planners of the district have left, the district is also called "Forest City" ( Estonian metsalinn ).

population

Nõmme is the Tallinn district with the highest proportion of Estonian-speaking population. According to the 2011 census, it is 85.3%, while the Russian-speaking population is only 13.1%.
