National Assembly (Gambia)
The National Assembly ( German National Assembly ) is the parliament building of the West African state of Gambia .
The building
The parliament building was erected from July 2010 and completed in October 2014.
Former building
The building previously used, sometimes also known as the House of Parliament ( German House of Parliament ), is located in the small government district at the entrance to the capital Banjul . It is located between Marina Parade and Independence Drive , near Arch 22 , the triumphal arch built in 1996 to commemorate the 1994 military coup led by former President Yahya Jammeh . It is a single-storey building with a rectangular floor plan of around 20 × 30 meters. The building is accessed from the western side and is covered with a flat tent roof.
Parliament
The Gambian political system is based on a unicameral system with 53 members. 48 members are democratically elected by the people every five years in a direct election, five additional members are appointed by the president.
The last parliamentary elections took place on April 6, 2017.
