geography
Nérac is located on the Baïse River , a left tributary of the Garonne . The municipality is located in the Buzet wine-growing region .
history
- The height of the city lies in the 16th century, when the d'Albret family, who settled here in the 11th century, became kings of Navarre in 1484 as a result of the marriage of John of Albret to Catherine of Navarre .
- In 1527 her son Heinrich II married the sister of Francis I , Margaret of Navarra , one of the first women writers in the French language ( Heptaméron ). It attracted many humanists and writers to Nérac .
- His daughter, Johanna III. , married Antoine de Bourbon in 1548 and converted to the Protestant religion . Joan III, Queen of Navarre (Protestant), and Catherine de Medici , Queen of France (Catholic), marry their children in 1572: Heinrich III. of Navarre and Margaret of Valois (Queen Margot). Johanna died shortly before, and is no longer present at this “blood wedding”: Katharina takes advantage of the arrival of the Protestant leaders in Paris and orders the massacre on St. Bartholomew's Night . She keeps her son-in-law prisoner in the Louvre until 1576. After his release, he returned to Nérac and led 1578-1579 negotiations with Catherine de Medici, from which the Edict of Nérac , an early forerunner of the Edict of Nantes (1598), which regulated freedom of religion, emerged. Later Heinrich III. of Navarra-Bourbon-Albret King of France under the name of Henry IV , after Henry III. of France died without offspring (1589). One knows the saying of the person concerned: "Paris is worth a fair!"
- In the 17th century, the city leaned under Louis XIII. and was taken by Henri de Lorraine, duc de Mayenne , in 1621 and its fortifications razed.
