history

Oak Brook was raised to an independent community ( Village ) in 1958 . The development of the place goes back in large part to Paul Butler , who was a local politician and landowner. His father came to the area in 1898 and bought a large amount of land. Gradually, the previously agricultural land was parceled out and sold individually. Paul Butler was primarily responsible for developing Oak Brooks into one of the richest suburbs in the entire country.

In the mid-1930s, landowners and farmers founded the Oak Brook Civic Association , which advocated demarcation from the neighboring communities of Hinsdale and Elmhurst and an independent community.

In 1958 the land area of Oak Brook was smaller than it is today, because shortly after the official formation of the community, additional land was purchased on which the Oakbrook Center , a large shopping mall , opened in 1962 , was built.

Paul Butler's interest in sports created a sports center with a golf course, polo play area, swimming pool, tennis courts, and other facilities in Oak Brook that no other place of its size would otherwise exist.
