Two Americans and two athletes from Great Britain qualified for the final. The field was completed by one starter each from Barbados, Brazil, Greece and Trinidad and Tobago.
The strongest sprinters over 200 meters , the two US athletes Michael Johnson and Maurice Greene , failed at the US Olympic qualifications in Sacramento due to injuries. The circle of favorites now included u. a. the sprinters who took the next places behind world champion Greene at the 1999 World Championships. These were the Brazilian Claudinei da Silva, Obadele Thompson from Barbados, who had already won bronze over 100 meters here in Sydney , and the Nigerian Francis Obikwelu, who was already eliminated in the semi-finals. Then there was Ato Boldon from Trinidad and Tobago, the bronze medalist from Atlanta and world champion from 1997 , here in Sydney already runner-up over 100 meters, and the Greek Konstantinos Kenteris, who had improved a lot in the Olympic year.
In the final it was initially very close. At the beginning of the home straight, the US-American Coby Miller, the British Darren Campbell and Thompson were pretty much on par, followed by Boldon and da Silva. The next runners were not far behind either. In the second hundred meters, Konstantinos Kenteris stormed past all competitors to win the Olympic Games in 20.09 s. Five hundredths of a second behind him, Darren Campbell won silver, another six hundredths of a second back, Ato Boldon was third, like he was over 100 meters. The next places went to Obadele Thompson, the British Christian Malcolm and Claudinei da Silva.
Konstantinos Kenteris was the first medalist and Olympic champion from Greece in this discipline.
