final

August 23, 2008 , 8:10 p.m.

The favorites for this competition were world record holder Kenenisa Bekele, who had already become Olympic champion over 10,000 meters six days earlier , and US world champion Bernard Lagat, who, however, was also eliminated as world champion in the semifinals over 1,500 meters . The competition came primarily from Africa. The Kenyan Vice World Champion Eliud Kipchoge and the World Cup third Moses Ndiema Kipsiro from Uganda had high expectations . The US World Cup fourth Matthew Tegenkamp and Kenenisa Bekele's brother Tariku, fifth in the World Cup, were among the wider group of athletes with good prospects for top positions .

The race started very quickly - first kilometer in 2: 45.49 min. In front were the three Ethiopians Tariku Bekele, his brother Kenenisa and Abreham Cherkos. It was followed by the Irishman Alistair Ian Cragg and with him the still closed field. Then the pace was really tightened again, the second kilometer was run in 2: 36.80 minutes. The field together with the three Ethiopians remained at the top. Cragg was now passed through to the rear and later gave up the race. At three thousand meters - last kilometer: 2: 38.56 min - the field drew more and more apart. Kenenisa Bekele took hold of the reins and tore a small gap to the pursuers, but the Kenyan Thomas Pkemei Longosiwa caught up again. The two Ethiopians followed him with other runners. One lap further, a group of six had formed, which a few hundred meters later became a group of five consisting of K. Bekele, the two Kenyans Kipchoge and Edwin Cheruiyot Soi, the world champion Lagat and Kepsiro. K. Bekele continued to push in a leading position, Lagat now also had to let go. For the fourth kilometer, the top group of four now needed 2: 31.67 minutes. In the following lap, Kipsiro also had problems and only three runners were ahead with K. Bekele, who was getting faster and faster, and the two Kenyans Kipchoge and Soi. In the end, Kenenisa Bekele pulled away from his opponents and won this race with ease, ahead of Eliud Kipchoge and Edwin Cheruiyot Soi. The Olympic champion covered the last lap in 53.5 s - just as fast as Asbel Kiprop as the winner over 1500 meters. Moses Ndiema Kipsiro came fourth ahead of the two Ethiopians Abreham Cherkos and Tariku Bekele. The best non-African in seventh place was the Mexicans Juan Luis Barrios. The top ten included eight African runners from Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Qatar and Eritrea.

For the first time, the winner of the Olympic final over 5000 meters was under thirteen minutes. Second- placed Eliud Kipchoge was also faster than Saïd Aouita's Olympic record from 1984 .

It was the second gold medal for Kenenisa Bekele, who ran here in the final together with his younger brother Tariku. Six days earlier, Kenenisa Bekele had also won the 10,000 meter race. After the Finn Paavo Nurmi ( 1920 - 10,000 m / 1924 - 5000 m), the Czechoslovak Emil Zátopek ( 1952 - 5000 m and 10,000 m), the Finn Lasse Virén ( 1972 - 5000 m and 10,000 m / 1976 - 5000 m and 10,000 m) m) and the Ethiopian Miruts Yifter ( 1980 - 5000 m and 10,000 m), Bekele is the fifth athlete to become Olympic champion over both track long distances and the fourth after Zátopek, Virén and Yifter, who has a double success on these distances at the same games succeeded. Only Virén had managed this twice.
