Papua New Guinea participated in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . It was the tenth participation in the Summer Olympics. The Papua New Guinea Sports Federation and Olympic Committee nominated eight athletes in six sports.

The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was the swimmer Ryan Pini .
