The throw had to be done from a standing position (looking in the direction of the throw). After the drop, a forward jump had to be made. The drop was carried out from a raised and sloping podium with a size of 80 centimeters by 70 centimeters. The iron-filled wooden disc weighed two kilograms. All athletes had to throw with the same device.

On April 27th a stone throwing competition was held. A total of 16 athletes from eight countries took part. It was measured to within half a centimeter. The "stone", an iron block weighing 6.4 kilograms, could be thrown at a running start, whereby the release had to take place in front of the throwing line, but this could then be crossed without penalty.

It was the first and so far last time that a stone throwing competition was held at the Olympic Games.

The competition consisted of standing long jump, discus throw (Greek), javelin throw, 192-meter run and wrestling (in that order). Only the best eight athletes from three disciplines were allowed to take part in the run. The six fastest runners then contested the wrestling the next day.
