The EUF is one of two European universities in Germany and, along with the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel and the Universität zu Lübeck, one of three universities in Schleswig-Holstein .

The university emerged from the pedagogical college founded in 1946 and offers courses in the areas of teaching and educational sciences, interdisciplinary European sciences, transformation / sustainability and economics . The special features include German-Danish courses in cooperation with the Syddansk Universitet in Sønderborg .

history

prehistory

Initial planning considerations for founding a university in the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein have been handed down since the mid-16th century.

Since the 1620s, the two sovereigns, the Danish King Christian IV and Duke Friedrich III. together, the goal of founding a Protestant university in Flensburg. When the Flensburg citizen Hans Marquartzen finally promised to donate money and goods in kind, the foundation of such a “Christian and Friedrich University” in 1632 was within reach. But the Thirty Years' War , which was soon followed by the partial destruction of the city, put an end to the plans. In his will, Friedrich III. However, his son Christian Albrecht continued to push the foundation forward. When Duke Christian Albrecht of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf obtained the imperial privilege to found a university in 1652 , he initially negotiated with Flensburg. Since the city was in the Duchy of Schleswig , which was a Danish fief , and not in the Holy Roman Empire , it was not possible for the new university to settle in Flensburg. Instead, Kiel , which was part of the Gottorf portion of the Duchy of Holstein , was given Christian Albrechts University in 1665 .

In 1877 Flensburg first became the seat of a university, the navigation school . This formed the nucleus for the Flensburg University of Applied Sciences , which today cooperates with the university. The forerunner of the University of Flensburg, the University of Education, was only created in 1946.

Pedagogical College

On March 2, 1946, a decree was issued by the High School Councilor Friedrich Drenckhahn on behalf of the President of the Province of Schleswig-Holstein to start work at the first college of education , namely in the east wing of the Mürwik Naval School in accordance with the order of the British military government of February 21, 1946 The south wing previously used by the hospital ( Klinik Ost ) will be occupied by the PH. The Mürwiker customs school was located in the north wing from 1950 to 1956 .

The Pedagogical University under the direction of Gerhard Bohne opened its doors on March 21, 1946. Initially, 220 students began studying to become primary school teachers . The course lasts 15 months. The lecturers were required to submit a summary of each lecture to the British Military Government. The first students passed a year later (more precisely on June 9, 1947) the examination for the first state examination for teaching at elementary schools in the subjects of pedagogy , psychology and a chosen subject.

On January 6, 1959, the college of education moved from the naval school to a new building at Mürwiker Strasse 77, near the Volkspark . Soon afterwards, on October 16, 1959, the new student dormitory , the "Flensburger Burse", opened right next to the new building of the college of education. Since January 1, 1963, secondary school teachers have also been trained at the Pedagogical University. By 1967 3588 students had studied at the college of education. On May 2, 1973, the University of Education received the (limited) right to award doctorates . In the 1980s, Germany's first Phenomena was at the University of Education .

Change to university

In 1985 the first attempt was made to establish a university in Flensburg. The Nordic University was founded privately but had to close in 1989 due to a lack of support and funds. The new state government preferred to convert the college of education into a university. In the 1990s, the transition from the pedagogical college to a university began. In 1992, the "Business Education and Management" course began its work with around 60 students. This is the first non-traditional educational course at the university. Two years later, on September 1, 1994, the state government decided to rename the college of education to "University of Education (University) Flensburg" (BU Flensburg for short). Since BU Flensburg suffered from a lack of space, the former vocational school at the Schützenkuhle was rented on April 1, 1995 (costs around € 150,000 per year). With the vocational school teacher course , the school's offerings were further expanded; on January 8, 1996, the founding commission for this new course met.

Moving to the Sandberg

The following years were also marked by the move to the Sandberg . On January 14, 1998, the joint library of the Flensburg BU and the Flensburg University of Applied Sciences was opened on Sandberg. In the year 2000 the "Bildungswissenschaftliche Hochschule Flensburg - Universität" was renamed "Universität Flensburg". The inauguration of the cafeteria took place on March 25, 2002, the majority of the students on campus at that time still consisted of FH students. On August 1, 2002, the university's institutes moved into the newly constructed building on Sandberg, and on October 29, 2002 the inauguration of the lecture hall center / Audimax took place. Only the institute built in the 1990s at Nordertor , the Flensburg Phenomena in the city center , remained. Since 2003 is also the Flens-Arena (home of the Hall Handball Bundesliga team SG Flensburg-Handewitt ) on campus, the fitness center and facilities for the university sports hosts and can be used by the university. There are also cafeterias in the university buildings. The old buildings of the PH Flensburg and the "Flensburger Burse" in the Mürwik district were demolished in 2004. They gave way to a shopping center. In 2006 the university celebrated its 60th anniversary, which is why a ceremony was held on November 8th of that year. In the same year the Uni-Kat Flensburg , a ship that was developed and built at the Institute for Physics and Chemistry and its Didactics as part of a project, was presented to the public.

The already advanced clean-up work in front of the main building after the storm (2013).

Further gradual expansion

In the years that followed, the university and campus continued to grow. At the beginning of 2010 a new indoor swimming pool and the "Campelle" (a chapel on the campus) were completed, in 2011 the Maritime Center of the Flensburg University of Applied Sciences and the Helsinki building of the EUF. Since November 14, 2016, the buildings of the European University have been named after European capitals. On November 29, 2010, the extension (Helsinki) with further lecture rooms and offices was inaugurated. In 2016/2017, a total of 24 container buildings (nine for the Flensburg University of Applied Sciences, 15 for the European University of Flensburg) of 400 square meters each as office and seminar buildings were erected on the entire campus. The state government purchased the residential containers in 2015 to accommodate refugees and made them available to the state's universities after the number of refugees fell.

At the end of October 2013 the roof of the main building was repeatedly damaged by a storm. During the hurricane Christian , parts of the roof came off and damaged parked cars. As a result, classes were canceled across the entire university.

Accreditation of the courses since 2008

In 2008, for various reasons, some courses (including the largest "Communication Science") were temporarily not accredited . The accreditation took place in 2009 through the decision of the Standing Accreditation Commission. The accreditation of the new study programs Educational Science (BA), Teaching Degree in Primary Schools (M.Ed.), Teaching Degree in Community Schools (M.Ed.) was carried out in 2013. The accreditation of the largest BA Educational Science course (which replaces the previously existing "Communication Science" course) also took place.

Renamed European University Flensburg 2014

Carsten Jensen at the EUF's Europe Prize on May 17, 2018

On June 30, 2014, the university was finally renamed "Europa-Universität Flensburg". The President of the EU stated on the occasion of the renaming: “The European University Flensburg is not a reinvention, but a sharpening of the profile. [...] What has already been achieved, [...] - the possibility of German-Danish double degrees, for example, or partnerships with over 60 international universities - is to be accentuated with the proclamation of the European University, as is the new [...] Today we decide on an obvious coupling between our university and the European idea. [...] According to our mission statement, we want to open up horizons and find answers to key questions about the future. We therefore want to build a European University that strengthens the terms of this model: diversity, equity, sustainability. We want to be a European University that values diversity and inclusion, gender and family justice, the rights of others and the rights of nature. For a teacher-focused university, the courageous advocacy of educational equality is one of our trademarks. [...] "

Development since 2015

Since the proclamation, internationally oriented semester times have been introduced at the EUF in September 2017 and European professorships have been created. In the area of study and teaching, new European science courses and the Interdisciplinary Center for European Studies (ICES) have been set up.

In 2018, a "Europe Prize" sponsored by the EUF's University Council was awarded to the Danish writer Carsten Jensen . The prize is intended to honor people who are committed to a strong and democratic Europe - with special attention to the Scandinavian region. The prize was endowed with 10,000 euros and is to be awarded every two years.

There are two central research centers at the Europa-Universität Flensburg: The "Center for Education, Teaching, School and Socialization Research" (ZeBUSS) has been bundling and promoting research since November 2016, in particular basic research in the areas of school and extracurricular educational processes. Since March 2018, the Interdisciplinary Center for European Studies (ICES) has been researching the complex processes of European development with the different perspectives and methods of the social sciences and humanities .

There are also the following research institutions at the EUF:

  • The Institute for Schleswig-Holstein Contemporary and Regional History (IZRG) researches and communicates the regional contemporary history of Schleswig-Holstein in a supra-regional and international context.
  • The Norbert Elias Center for Transformation Design & Research (NEC) researches the possibilities of social change under the guiding principle of sustainability against the background of climate change, resource scarcity and environmental pollution.

Since the name was changed to European University in June 2014, the European focus has been continuously expanded. Since then, more than ten professorships with a European focus, the English-language, European bachelor's degree "European Cultures and Society" and the "Interdisciplinary Center for European Studies" (ICES) have been created. In addition to interdisciplinary European research, the relationship to Europe plays an important role in teaching; many subjects and courses of study place their content in a European context.

internationalization

In the autumn semester 2017/18, the semester times were designed to be internationally compatible with important partner universities: since then, the EUF has been one of two German universities alongside the University of Mannheim where the lecture period in the spring semester runs from March to June and in the autumn semester from September to December. The EUF maintains relationships with over 120 partner universities in 35 countries, where student exchanges and mutual recognition of academic achievements have been agreed. The International Center (IC) coordinates the exchange. The IC assists in finding a suitable university, financing and recognition of academic achievements. It offers students and employees free language courses and looks after students, doctoral candidates and guest lecturers from other countries.

Refugees interested in studying

Since 2015, the EUF supported by the "Program to study preparation and integration of fugitives" (ProRef) study interested Escaped in the linguistic, methodological and cultural preparation for their studies and the integration into the German university system , the labor market and society. The one-year program is funded by the state of Schleswig-Holstein and the DAAD with funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) with a total of almost 1.3 million euros.
