The Rýchlostná cesta R4 is a major part of an expressway in eastern Slovakia that is still being planned . It will replace the state roads I / 21 , I / 18 and I / 17 on its route . Larger cities on the expressway are Prešov and Košice . Currently only the 4.6 km long bypass of Svidník (two lanes, opened on December 20, 2010) and the 14.2 km long Košice – Milhosť line (four lanes, opened on November 7, 2013) are in operation. Furthermore, the R4 runs together with the D1 on the Prešov – Budimír route for around 19 km.

The planning of the route between Lipníky (east of Prešov) and Svidník is delayed by constant route changes. The so-called red variant runs essentially parallel to the existing main road through Giraltovce and Okrúhle and is 41.9 km long. The blue variant diverts to the east to the towns of Hanušovce nad Topľou and Stropkov as well as along the Veľká Domaša reservoir and is 50.2 km long. The groundbreaking ceremony for the 4.3 km long section between Prešov-sever and Prešov-zapad took place on July 30, 2019.
