geography

Rians is the westernmost municipality in the Var department. It extends over a wide, wooded area and three broad valleys. Rians is the capital of a canton that borders on several departments: in the north to the department Alpes-de-Haute-Provence , in the west to the department Bouches-du-Rhône and in between on a border only a few hundred meters long to the department Vaucluse . Rians is close to the Massif de la Sainte-Baume , the Sainte-Victoire mountains , the Pays d'Aix and the lakes of the Verdon .

history

The name of the village appears for the first time in sources from the 11th century. At that time it was called Riannum or Rianz . Originally it was a fiefdom of the chapter of Saint-Sauveur. In 1348 Queen Joan I handed the village over to Raymond d'Agoult . Later it was part of the rule of Valbelle and Castellane . During the construction of the Saint-Laurent church, the lifeless body of a woman from the Fabri family was found in a very good state of preservation. She was venerated like a saint, her body decayed after it was taken to the penitential chapel.
