“Right from the start, the SPÖ had shown great courtesy towards the National Socialists. As early as 1945, for example, a double type of membership was introduced, one exercising and one supporting, in order to be able to integrate former Nazi members who were classified as unencumbered. Since the Carinthian ÖVP showed no concession here, the SPÖ won potential ÖVP supporters. "

- Carinthian Parliament : Platform for Political Education

In the first elections in Carinthia after the Second World War on November 25, 1945 , the newly founded SPÖ was able to achieve a relative majority with 48.8% and almost 10 percentage points ahead of the second-placed ÖVP .

“The 1948 program includes topics of reconstruction. The work program of 1953 refers to the development achievements and focuses on the demand “Carinthia, as the poorest federal state, should be lifted out of its poverty”. Specific goals included full employment through increased public investment, increasing purchasing power to stimulate the economy, promoting social housing and education, as well as better power supply in mountain villages and improved transport infrastructure to them in order to secure agriculture threatened by rural exodus .

A clear focus did not emerge until the 1956 program. The primary goal was to improve the economic conditions in Carinthia so that the other areas could then be tackled successfully. With this catch-up program and the associated 300 million schilling budget (budget), an investment of one billion schillings could be achieved. The social gap in Carinthia should also be alleviated through the economic advantages. This was particularly necessary in southern Carinthia. It was economically disadvantaged as a result of the political uncertainty in the first post-war decade.

It was primarily the work of Ferdinand Wedenig (1945-1965) that the party assumed a leading position. Wedenig was a member of the labor movement even before the First World War. Sentenced to prison by the corporate state and persecuted illegally as a member of the Revolutionary Socialists, he was interned after July 20, 1944 like many other party comrades in the Dachau concentration camp. Immediately after his return in early 1945, Wedenig was appointed to the regional council of the provisional state government and to the state party secretary of the SPÖ, which was already active as a party. When he was elected country steward on October 20, 1945, the party already had 12,000 members. District organizations and numerous local organizations were already in place. Within just five months of the end of the war, the party grew very strong despite difficult conditions. For example, there was still a ban on holding meetings and founding organizations. The public transport infrastructure and communications were also not yet intact. Wedenig was a good organizer. He had set up party representatives in all political districts and thus created the conditions for the establishment of many local organizations. "
