Steele County is a county in the state of North Dakota in the United States . The county seat is Finley .

The county is located almost in the far east of North Dakota, about 40 miles from Minnesota and has an area of ​​1,853 square kilometers, of which 8 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Grand Forks County , Traill County , Cass County , Barnes County , Griggs County, and Nelson County .

history

Steele County was formed on March 8, 1883, and finally organized on June 13 of the same year. It was named after either Edward H. Steele , a finance manager for the Red River Land Company , or Franklin Steele, a successful timber entrepreneur and large landowner in the Dakota Territory .

Three of the county's structures are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of April 1, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Steele County had 2,258 people in 923 households and 635 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.32 percent white, 0.04 percent African American, 0.62 percent Native American, 0.04 percent Asian and 0.22 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.75 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.18 percent of the population.

Of the 923 households, 29.7 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 62.3 percent were married couples living together, 4.4 percent were single mothers, 31.2 percent were non-families, 28.3 percent were single households, and 13.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.01.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 27.6 percent of residents under 18, 4.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 19.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 107.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 108.7 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,757 , and the median income for a family is $ 43,914. Males had a median income of $ 30,104 versus $ 20,694 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,601. 5.0 percent of families and 7.1 percent families lived below the poverty line. 8.0 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 3.6 percent were people over 65 years of age.
