The Steinberg is an elevation of the Hümmling , a ground moraine landscape, and the name of a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony municipality of Börger in the Sögel municipality in the Emsland district .
Nature reserve
The nature reserve with the registration number NSG WE 247 is 24 hectares in size. The area has been a nature reserve since April 29, 2006. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Emsland.
The nature reserve is located northeast of Börger. It places the Steinberg, a 30.2 meter high elevation, and part of the surrounding areas with its sandy heaths and grasslands under protection. The heather is a relic of earlier agricultural use. The nature reserve is surrounded by agricultural land and forests .
The area is used today by an air sports club as a glider airfield. There is a runway to the north and east of the Steinberg . There is also a model airfield in the southeast of the nature reserve. Use as a glider airfield remains free.
The nature reserve lies in the north of the Meppen shooting range used by the Wehrtechnischen Dienststelle für Waffen und Munitions (WTD 91).
