al-Munafiqun

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Al-Munafiqun ( Arabic المنافقون al-Munāfiqūn  'The Hypocrites') is the 63rd sura of the Koran , it contains 11 verses . It wasproclaimedin Medina and describes the grave burden placed on the life of the community by the attitude of the hypocrites.

In the first verse, the eponymous hypocrites pronounce the second part of the creed before Mohammed , although in their case it is merely lip service . As an example of such a hypocrite, 'Abd Allah ibn Ubayy is given, who had a leading position with the Banu Khazradsch . Although he converted to Islam after Muhammad's arrival in Medina , he is still seen as an adversary of the Prophet. He was a stately figure and had a good rhetoric, so that Mohammed was happy to listen to him. In verse 4, however, the Koran compares its rhetoric with useless boards that are sorted out and leaned against the wall. The hypocrites rely on their power and want to drive the weaker ones, namely Mohammed and his community, from Medina. They are called upon to donate before death overtakes them.
