Türkiye 2nd Futbol Ligi 1965/66
1st Lig 1966/67

The Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi 1966/67 was the fourth season of the second highest Turkish league in professional men's football. It was started on September 10, 1966 with the 1st game day and ended on June 25, 1967 with the 32nd and final game day.

In the 1966/67 season, the total number of teams was increased from 22 to 33. These 33 teams were drawn into two groups, including the red group with 17 teams and the white group with 16 teams. In the preseason, after the regular playing time, the four best of both groups were included in a final round and in this final round the two best were determined as promoters. In contrast to the previous season, no final round was played, but the top of the table in both groups rose directly to the higher Süper Lig and the team in the last place in the table in both groups in the newly founded Türkiye 3. Futbol Ligi .

Beginning of the season were the remaining from the previous season 19 teams, the two relegated from the Süper Lig Şekerspor , Beykozspor and the thirteen newcomers Zonguldakspor , Edirnespor , Denizlispor , Antalyaspor , Adanaspor , Aydınspor , Kütahyaspor , Galata SK , Kocaelispor , Trabzonspor , Kayserispor , Boluspor , Davutpaşa SK has been added. The newcomers were either accepted as champions from the third-rate regional amateur leagues at the time or had met the requirements of the Turkish Football Association and were allowed to participate in the young league, which was only four seasons. The background to this recording was as follows: At the beginning of the 1960s, the Turkish Football Association decided to start a project whereby all the provinces of Turkey could participate in professional football. To this end, the governors and notables of all provinces nationwide have been informed that, if not present, you could represent your province in this league by founding a competitive football club. As a result, new clubs were founded within a few years and applications for participation in this league were submitted. The second highest division, the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi , started for the first time in the 1963/64 season. Since the provinces applied for the establishment of a club, the fulfillment of the conditions or the participation at different speeds, the league was expanded again and again in its first seasons in order to be able to accept new clubs. For the 1966/67 season, the participation request was so large that in addition to the admission to the 2nd Lig, the third highest division, the Türkiye 3rd Futbol Ligi , was founded and some of the clubs were accepted into this league.

Mersin İdman Yurdu reached the championship of the group red and thus the first participation in the club's history in the Süper Lig . In the white group , Bursaspor secured the championship and also took part in the Süper for the first time. The Turkish Football Association had the champions of the league determined by a playoff between the two first-placed teams. In this encounter Mersin İdman Yurdu met against Bursaspor and won the championship after a 2-0 win. The Turkish Football Association later declared both clubs to be champions of the TFF 1st Lig. In addition to these two regular promoters, Şekerspor also rose. The background to this irregular admission was a legal dispute that lasted until May 1967 and went out in favor of Şekerspor. In the 1965/66 season the encounter Şekerspor- Beykozspor was canceled due to fan riots and attacks on the players of Şekerspor when the score was 1-0 for Şekerspor and the game was repeated. The rescheduling ended 1: 1. The Şekerspor officials protested against this replay and insisted that the game was interrupted by the Beykozspor fans and that they themselves had to be determined as the winner by decision. After Şekerspor was relegated at the end of the 1965/66 season with a point difference but with a significantly better goal difference, they lodged an appeal in court. They demanded that the game should be recognized as a victory, whereby one would have achieved relegation. After a year of trial, the court declared that Şekerspor had been the winner. The Turkish Football Association decided that, after having played in the second division for a year, Şekerspor would participate in the first division in addition to the regular promoted players.

At the end of the season, Beyoğluspor from the red group and Davutpaşa SK were relegated from the white group .

Before the start of the season, the club Çukurova İdman Yurdu changed its name to Mersin İdman Yurdu .
