After a 2-0 win in the first leg, the second leg was lost 3-0 and qualification was missed.
2018 Russia not qualified In the qualification of Iceland and Croatia failed.

1994 in the United States

When the qualifying groups were drawn on December 8, 1991, there was still no independent football association of the Ukraine ; it was only founded five days later as an independent association and joined FIFA in 1992. As a result, Ukraine has not yet been able to qualify for the World Cup . The place for the Soviet Union was taken by the Russian team, which qualified for the World Cup, but were eliminated in the preliminary round.

1998 in France

Four years later, the Ukrainians were able to qualify for the second World Cup in France for the first time . Behind European champions Germany , who qualified directly, they finished second, ahead of Portugal , Armenia , Northern Ireland and Albania . So they were qualified for the playoff games of the group runners-up, in which they met Croatia . After a 2-0 draw in Zagreb , the 1-1 draw in the second leg was not enough to qualify for the World Cup, instead Croatia went to the World Cup for the first time and surprisingly came third.

2002 in Japan and South Korea

Even four years later, Ukraine failed in the playoff games of the group runners-up, this time to Germany, which had to go to the playoffs for the first time. In the group stage of qualifying for the first World Cup in Asia, the Ukrainians finished second behind Poland, ahead of Belarus , Norway , Wales and Armenia . The Ukrainians only lost their first game, a home game against Poland, but had to share the points with their opponents in five games and could only win four games. In the playoffs it was only enough to make a 1-1 draw at home, the return match in Dortmund was lost 4-1.

2006 in Germany

Andrij Shevchenko converts the penalty against Tunisia to 1-0 victory

Four years later, the only World Cup qualification to date was achieved. In a group with Turkey , Denmark , Greece , Albania , Georgia and Kazakhstan , the qualification was made perfect on September 3, 2005 with a 1-1 draw in Georgia. A 0: 1 home defeat against Turkey in the penultimate game and a 2: 2 against Albania in the last game could be coped with. The best Ukrainian scorer was Andrij Shevchenko with six goals.

At the finals, Ukraine was drawn into a group with Spain , Tunisia and Saudi Arabia . In their first World Cup game, they clearly lost 4-0 against Spain, where they had to play 43 minutes after an emergency brake from Wladyslaw Waschtschuk .

In the second game against Saudi Arabia, however, they were able to win 4-0, with Andrij Russol already scoring the first World Cup goal for Ukraine in the 4th minute. In the last game, Andrij Shevchenko secured a 1-0 win against Tunisia with a converted penalty kick, which meant that Ukraine made it into the knockout round as second in the group. Here they met Switzerland and after 120 goalless minutes, the penalty shoot-out had to decide who was allowed to move into the quarter-finals. Shevchenko failed with the first penalty against Swiss goalkeeper Pascal Zuberbühler , but Ukrainian goalkeeper Oleksandr Schowkowskyj was able to immediately parry the first Swiss penalty. After the next three Ukrainians were successful, while the second Swiss only hit the crossbar and the third Swiss's penalty was again saved by Schowkowskyj, the last three shooters no longer had to compete. In the quarter-finals, the Ukrainians met Italy and lost 3-0. Italy was then able to secure the World Cup title for the fourth time, while Ukraine said goodbye to the World Cup for at least 12 years.

2010 in South Africa

In qualifying for the first World Cup in Africa , Ukraine only finished second behind England and ahead of Croatia , Belarus , Kazakhstan and Andorra . Ukraine therefore had to return to the playoffs of the group runners-up and met the Greeks trained by Otto Rehhagel . After a 0-0 win in Greece, the home game was lost 0-1, so that qualification was missed again.

2014 in Brazil

In qualifying for the second World Cup in Brazil , Ukraine had to compete against England, Montenegro , Poland , Moldova and San Marino and only finished second behind England, one point behind. The direct qualification was gambled away with a goalless draw on the third last day of play against England, as both then won the remaining games. So Ukraine had to go back to the playoffs of the group runners-up and met ex-world champions France . After a 2-0 home game, the hopes of qualifying again were high, because never before had a team in the playoffs managed to make up a 2-0 deficit from the first leg. But France were the first team to succeed, and with a 3-0 win, the former world champions qualified.

2018 in Russia

For the qualification , Ukraine, which has been coached by Andrij Shevchenko since the preliminary round at the 2016 European Championship , was drawn into the group with Croatia , Iceland , Turkey and Finland . After Kosovo was admitted to FIFA, this team was subsequently assigned to this group. Since Ukraine does not recognize Kosovo, the home game against Kosovo was played in Krakow, Poland. After half of the games, of which the Ukrainians won two and lost one, they were only in third place. In the second half, they won three games and lost two games. Before the last game, they had the chance to at least achieve second place with a home win against Croatia, but lost 2-0, so that only third place jumped out. Group winner was surprisingly Iceland, which is participating for the first time.
