Kirchschlag in the Bucklige Welt is located in the industrial district in the south-eastern corner of Lower Austria . The area of ​​the municipality covers 57.96 km². 41.67% of the area is forested.

etymology

The place name Kirchschlag indicates in the stem syllable "-schlag" that this was a still un cleared forest area that had to be felled, while the prefix "Kirch-" indicates that the settlement was most likely on the initiative of the church of the Reichersberg Monastery . First documented mention: 1246/1255 as Castrum Kryslag

history

Before the birth of Christ, the area was part of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the surroundings of the Celtic hill settlement Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg , which was the main town for the entire north-east Noricum .

Later under the Romans, today's Kirchschlag was then in the province of Pannonia .

The town of Kirchschlag in the Bucklige Welt is a historically very important place, which is mainly due to its location on the eastern border of the old German Empire, which the heavily fortified settlement repeatedly appears as a bulwark of the West against the enemies attacking from the east let. Significantly, the place is still referred to in documents from the 18th century as "Granizfeste".

Kirchschlag is first mentioned in documents in 1246, when a follower of the Hungarian King Bela IV. "Sub castro" Kryslag was killed. In the period that followed, the castle was the focus of armed conflicts and the ownership structure changed frequently.

In 1651 Hans Christoph III built. from Puchheim am Kirchschlager Hauptplatz a mansion (courtyard house) in the style of the Renaissance. After his death in 1657, Kirchschlag passed to Count Nikolaus Pálffy , who was able to assert inheritance claims through his mother Eva Susanne von Puchheim. The Pálffy belonged to the few noble families in Hungary who were always loyal to the House of Habsburg . Their much larger possessions were, however, in Hungary, so that their interest in the united manors of Kirchschlag- Krumbach was relatively small; nevertheless they kept this until the abolition of the subject relationship (1848).

In the course of its history, Kirchschlag was often ravaged by hostile armies. B. 1250, 1254, 1271 and 1482 by the Hungarians, 1532 and 1683 by the Turks , 1605 by the Haiduken under Stephan Bocskai , 1621 by the robber hordes of Gábor Bethlen , 1703 by the Kuruc , 1805 and 1809 by the French ( coalition wars ) and in 1921 by Hungarian irregulars.

A war memorial at the Zöbernbach Bridge near the parish church still commemorates the battle of September 5, 1921, in connection with the occupation of Burgenland from Hungary by gangs of a company of the Austrian Armed Forces . Ten soldiers from the Federal Army and 21 Hungarian irregulars were killed in this battle. Towards the end of the Second World War, the Red Army first stepped onto old Austrian soil on Good Friday 1945 in Kirchschlag.

On December 12, 2002, the market town of Kirchschlag was raised to a town council.

In the 1970s, as part of the community and school reform, the previously independent communities Aigen (1970), Lembach (1970), Stang (1971) and Ungerbach (1970) were merged with Kirchschlag.

According to the data of the 2001 census , 94.1% of the population are Roman Catholic and 1.0% Protestant . 1.5% are Muslims , 1.1% belong to Orthodox churches . 1.4% of the population have no religious affiliation.

Blazon : “In the red shield above green earth, a square, crenellated silver city wall with a mighty gate system, open golden gate wings and raised golden portcullis; the gate is flanked by two silver towers, also crowned with battlements, between them a shield divided by blue and red, at the top growing out of the dividing line a rising silver lion turned to the right; the shield held by a golden angel who spreads his wings over the two towers. " The Kirchschlager market coat of arms awarded in 1988 goes back to a market seal that was probably created around the same time, i.e. in the middle of the 15th century. A contemporary image can be found in the vault of the late Gothic Kirchschlager parish church (coat of arms keystone in the choir, marked 1480). The coat of arms shows a fortification with a mighty gate system and two towers, above an angel holding the coat of arms of the Lords of Pottendorf in his hands. The Pottendorfer were from the beginning of the 14th century to extinction in the male line in 1488 the owner of the castle and dominion Kirchschlag. They are likely to have given the seal on which the coat of arms is based on the market as an official seal. Kirchschlag played an important role in the Hungarian Wars of the late Middle Ages as a border fortress and later as a place of escape during the Turkish Wars. The fortification shown in the coat of arms with the mighty, open gate system is interpreted to the effect that Kirchschlag, as a border fortress and place of escape, was open to all residents of the area in the event of enemy threat. The angel spreads his wings protectively over the market and the people seeking refuge within its walls.

• The Kapellmeister Josef Piribauer and Werner Hlavka founded the market chapel Kirchschlag in the Bucklige Welt in 1971 - today the Stadtkapelle Kirchschlag . It consisted of 30 men and 4 women. There has been a musical friendship with the Kőszeg town band since 1973 , and the band plays at the Kőszeg grape harvest festival every year.
