The Vermont House of Representatives ( Vermont House of Representatives ) is the lower house of the Vermont General Assembly , the legislature of the US state of Vermont .

The parliamentary chamber is composed of 150 members. 66 electoral districts each have one MP and 42 each have two MPs. Each MP represents approximately 4,100 residents. The MPs are each elected for two-year terms; there is no limit to the terms of office. The House of Representatives boardroom, along with the State Senate, is located in the Vermont State House in the capital, Montpelier .

Structure of the chamber

The Speaker of the House is the Chairman of the House of Representatives . He is first elected by the majority parliamentary group in the chamber before confirmation by the entire parliament follows. The speaker is also responsible for the legislative process and oversees the assignments to the various committees. The current incumbent is Shap Smith of Morristown , a Democrat from the Lamoille-Washington-1 constituency.

Other important office holders are the majority leader and the opposition leader ( minority leader ), who are elected by the respective parliamentary groups. The Democratic majority is currently led by Lucy Leriche from Hardwick (Caledonia-2 constituency), while the Republican minority leader is Donald H. Turner from Milton (Chittenden-9 constituency). In contrast to almost all other state legislatures, there is a third faction: that of the Vermont Progressive Party , headed by Christopher Pearson from Burlington (Chittenden-3-4 constituency).
