The Waitaki District is a largely part of the Canterbury region administrative unit on the South Island of New Zealand . The district council, called the Waitaki District Council ( District Council ), is based in the city of Oamaru , as is the district administration. About 55% of the district is in the Canterbury region and the remaining 45% is in the Otago region .

geography

Geographical location

The Waitaki District has a total land area of 7109 km², making it the third largest district in the Canterbury region . At the census in 2013, the district had 20,829 inhabitants, bringing it to a population density of 2.9 inhabitants per km².

In the west the district borders on the Queenstown-Lakes District , in the south on the Central Otago District and the urban area of Dunedin City . The northwesternmost tip shares a district boundary with the Westland District , which is already part of the West Coast region. The northeast, however, connects to the districts of Mackenzie and Waimate , which also belong to the Canterbury region . The eastern border of the Waitaki District is formed by the coastline to the Pacific Ocean .

If you disregard the small stretch of the Waitaki River plain north of Oamaru , the landscape is dominated by the mountains of the Kakanui Mountains with their foothills, the St. Marys Range , Hawkdun Range and the Barrier Range . The Waitaki River , which is also identical to the northern district boundary, determines the northern landscape, in which Lake Ohau fills the Waitaki River in the northwest via the Ohau River together with the Ahuriri River .

The largest city in the district is by far Oamaru with around 13,000 inhabitants. All other places are below 1000 inhabitants.

climate

The climatic conditions in the Waitaki District are very different, as the district stretches from the east coast to the east flanks of the New Zealand Alps . The extreme west of the district records precipitation from 1200 mm upwards to over 2000 mm per year. In the mountains of the Kakanui Mountains , precipitation around 1200 mm per year can still be expected. In the other regions they are between 500 mm and 700 mm depending on the altitude. The average daytime temperatures vary between 17 ° C and 23 ° C in summer depending on the location. In winter, on the other hand, they are between 1 ° C and 2 ° C on the coast, but in the single-digit minus range inland. The duration of sunshine is also unevenly distributed. In the high altitudes in the west, the sun does not come out for more than 1,600 hours, in the east the sunshine duration varies between 1,800 and 1,900 hours per year.

population

Population development

Of the 20,829 inhabitants of the district in 2013, 1278 inhabitants were of Māori origin (6.1%). This means that 0.2% of the country's Māori population lived in the Waitaki District . The median income for the population in 2013 was NZ $ 25,300,  compared to NZ $ 28,500 national average.

Origin and languages

When asked about ethnic group membership in the 2013 census, 91.2% said they were European, 6.5% said they had Māori roots, 2.4% came from the islands of the Pacific and 3.1 % came from Asia (multiple answers were possible). 13.0% of the population said they were born overseas. 1.1% of the population spoke Tonga as the second most common language after English. The Maori language was spoken by 9.0% of the Māori .

politics

administration

The Waitaki District is again divided into four wards , the Oamaru Ward with six Councilors (councilors), the Corriedale Ward with two and the Ahuriri Ward and Waihemo Ward with one councilor each . The ten Councilors , together with the Mayor, form the District Council and are re-elected every three years.

Infrastructure

Road traffic

The district is connected by the New Zealand State Highway 1 , which comes from Dunedin , crosses the district on the coast. In the northern part of the district, State Highway 83 runs along the Waitaki River and connects State Highway 1 with State Highway 8 in the western part. In the southern part of the district, which is in the Otago region , State Highways 85 only provides cross connections.

Rail transport

Also along the coast railway line runs the South Iceland Main Trunk Railway , the Oamaru with Invergarcill the south and Christchurch in the north and other northern parts of the South Island connects. However, only goods are transported on this railway line.
