About this picture

Weimar (Lahn) is a municipality in the south of the central Hessian district of Marburg-Biedenkopf . The municipal administration is based in Niederweimar .

geography

location

The municipality extends from the Lahn valley south of Marburg to the west to those of the tributaries Allna (together with Ohe ), Wenkbach and Walgerbach , which flow into the Par-Allna tributary .

In terms of nature , the districts are in the Marburger Lahntalsenke (places on or near the Lahn), in the Salzbödetal (upper reaches of Wenkbach and Walgerbach), in the Elnhausen-Michelbacher sink (Weiershausen and Allna on the lower reaches of the Allna system) and in the Damshäuser Kuppen (Nesselbrunn on the middle reaches of the Ohe).

The large community covers an area of around 47 square kilometers .

Neighboring communities

Weimar borders the city of Marburg in the north, the Ebsdorfergrund municipality in the east, the Fronhausen municipality in the south, the Lohra municipality in the southwest , and the city of Gladenbach in the far west (all in the Marburg-Biedenkopf district).

history

The name Weimar is said to be composed of the old Germanic words wih (holy, consecrated) and the old high German mar (lake, swamp or moor).

Allna was first mentioned in a document around 807 and is therefore the earliest mentioned district of the municipality. In addition, Kehna , Oberweimar and Niederweimar are considered to be the oldest places in the municipality because of their names alone. The foundation of the Martinskirche in Oberweimar is assumed in the pre-Bonifazian period, i.e. around 600, at the time of proselytizing by Irish-Scottish monks.

In recent years, when the gravel pit near Niederweimar was expanded, large Neolithic and early imperial settlements were found that were secured in emergency excavations. In the area of the Allna the open-air museum Zeiteninsel is currently being built .
