Westjet Airlines is a Canadian low-cost airline based in Calgary .

history

In June 1995 WestJet was founded as a low cost airline for western Canada by Clive Beddoe, Mark Hill, Tim Morgan and Donald Bell. The airline's concept was based heavily on the successful Southwest Airlines concept . David Neeleman - formerly in a leading position at Southwest Airlines and Morris Air and founder of JetBlue Airways - acted as advisor .

On February 29, 1996, WestJet started with two cheaply acquired Boeing 737-200s . At that time the airline served the cities of Calgary, Edmonton , Winnipeg , Kelowna , Vancouver . In the same year, two more Boeing 737-200s joined the fleet, which was also steadily expanded in the following years.

After the takeover of Canadian Airlines International by Air Canada , there were profound changes in Canada's aviation in 1999. WestJet also took advantage of the changed framework conditions and expanded the route network to eastern Canada in 2000. WestJet now reached Halifax , Moncton and Ottawa . Hamilton was expanded into the central hub for Eastern Canada in the same year . In 2000, the company's founders received a national award for their services to the Canadian airlines - the " Ernst & Young entrepreneur of the year award". In the same year, the first shares were issued, which brought another capital boost. This was used to finance the construction of a head office and a hangar in Calgary, as well as the procurement of additional aircraft .

In August 2003, WestJet reached a mutual agreement with Air Transat , which regulated closer cooperation between the two airlines. In April 2004 WestJet relocated its eastern hub from Hamilton to Toronto-Pearson and thus to the economically more interesting triangle between Toronto, Ottawa and Montréal . On September 20, 2004, WestJet expanded its flight network for the first time beyond the national borders of Canada by flying to destinations in the USA .

At the. On August 1, 2012, Westjet announced that it had ordered 20 De Havilland DHC-8-400s for the new WestJet Encore subsidiary . The subsidiary offers flights on regional routes.
