The University of Bolton (formerly Bolton Institute of Higher Education) is a university in Bolton, Greater Manchester, England.
History
Bolton Institute of Higher Education was formed in 1982 by the merger of the Bolton Institute of Technology and Bolton College of Education (Technical).
Bolton Institute was awarded the right to award taught degrees in 1990, with the powers to award research degrees in 1994.
In April 2004, the Institute was awarded university status with immediate effect. The institution then set about searching for a new name to match its university status. A long consultation period considered many titles, including 'Bolton University', 'Bolton Institute University', 'West Pennines University', 'Bolton Metropolitan University' and 'Bolton Leverhulme University', before announcing 'University of Bolton' as the new title on September 2 2004. The title was approved by the Privy Council on January 27 2005 and officially adopted.
Academic quality
The UK national Quality Audit of University of Bolton 2005[3] reports that "broad confidence can be placed in the soundness of the current management of the quality of its programmes and in the University's institutional-level capacity to manage effectively the security of its awards." Although it offers research opportunities leading to Master and PhD degrees by research, it is best-known for its vocationally focused, and industry-relevant taught degree programmes. Among its most popular courses are its Business programmes offered via the internationally acclaimed Bolton Business School. In particuliar its MBA programmes have been deemed as excellent by leading publications[4], with a number of these receiving the highest government accredition possible [5]. An Education Guardian A recent survey of international students rated the university of Bolton amongst the best universitites in the country, relating to its teaching standards [6]report[7] ranked Bolton #1 in the "Fastest Growing University" category. It is widely believed that the university's modest performances in undergraduate rranking tables is significantly a result of the high 'drop out' of its students and does not reflect its excellent teaching and research standards [8].
Among its numerous enviable academic achievements, its Building Studies is ranked #1 in the UK.[9] Due to its international recognition stretching to as far as the UAE, it will soon be opening its Ras al Khaimah Campus.[10]
