The University of Ulster (UU; Irish Ollscoil Uladh ) is the largest university in Northern Ireland ( United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland ) and, after the National University of Ireland (NUI), the second largest on the Irish island .

It has no contiguous campus , but four branches, in Belfast (1,900 students), Coleraine (4,502), Jordanstown (12,718) and Magee (4,219), as well as branches in London , Birmingham and Qatar (together 649 students; all counts: academic year 2017 / 18). The administrative headquarters are in Coleraine.

UU has the widest range of courses in Ireland. It is particularly renowned in the field of natural sciences, especially biomedicine .

history

The university has existed in its current form since 1984 when the New University of Ulster, Coleraine (founded in 1968) and Ulster Polytechnic, Jordanstown (founded in 1971), merged. The New University's oldest college, Magee College, dates back to 1865 as a faculty within the Royal University of Ireland, the forerunner of what is now the largest university in the Republic of Ireland , the National University of Ireland.

Students

Of the 24,530 students in the 2018/2019 academic year, 14,035 were female and 10,495 were male. 20,325 came from Northern Ireland, 1,625 from England. In 2007, 27,595 students were enrolled; in 2010/2011 there were 25,520.

Former and honorary doctorates of the university

The businessman and politician Seán Gallagher received an MBA from the University of Ulster in 2000. Politician Cecilia Keaveney is also a graduate of the university.

In 2007 the Irish musician Enya received an honorary doctorate, in 2012 Gary Lightbody , singer of the (Northern) Irish band Snow Patrol , received an honorary doctorate from the University of Ulster. Former US President Bill Clinton (2010) and US politician Richard Neal (2019) were also honored with honorary doctorates .
