Suggestions

List new suggestions here, under the date the article was created or expanded (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the top. If a suitable image is available, place it after the suggestion. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion; self-nominations are permitted and encouraged.

Remember:

  • Proposed articles should:
    • not be marked as stubs;
    • contain more than 1,500 characters (around 1.5 kilobytes) in main body text (ignoring infoboxes, categories, references, lists, and tables); This is a suggestion, not a firm rule; it is rather silly to oppose an article solely because it is 1490 characters in length.
    • cite their sources (these sources should be properly labelled; that is, not under an "External links" header); and
    • be no more than five days old (former redirects, stubs, or other short articles that have been expanded fivefold or more within the last five days are acceptable).
  • Articles with good references and citations are preferred.
  • To count the number of characters in a piece of text, you will need to use a free website like this, or an external software program that has a character-counting feature. For example, if you are using Microsoft Word, select the text from the article page (or, in the case of "Did you know" nominations, this Talk page) – not the edit page containing Wikitext – then copy and paste it into a blank document. Click "Tools", then "Word Count", and note the "Characters (with spaces)" figure. Other word processing programs may have a similar feature. (The character counts indicated on "Revision history" pages are not accurate for DYK purposes as they include categories, infoboxes and similar text in articles, and comments and signatures in hooks on this page.)
  • Suggested facts (the 'hook') should be:
    • interesting to draw in a variety of readers,
    • short and concise (fewer than about 200 characters, including spaces),
    • neutral,
    • definite facts that are mentioned in the article, and
    • preferably cited in the article with an inline citation.
  • Suggested pictures should be:
    • suitably and freely (PD, GFDL, CC etc) licensed (NOT fair use) because the main page can only have freely-licensed pictures;
    • attractive and interesting, even at a very small (100px-wide) resolution;
    • already in the article; and
    • relevant to the article.
    • formatted as [[Image:image name |right|100x100px| Description]] and placed directly above the suggested fact.
  • Proposed lists should have two characteristics to be considered for DYK: (i) be a compilation of entries that are unlikely to have ever been compiled anywhere else (e.g. List of architectural vaults), and (ii) have 1,500+ character non-stub text that brings out interesting, relational, and referenced facts from the compiled list that may not otherwise be obvious but for the compilation.
  • Please sign the nomination with the create/expand date and the name of the creator(s) or creator and nominator, such as:
    • *...that (text)? -- July 19, 2007 new article by [[User]]; Nom by ~~~~
    • *...that (text)? -- July 19, 2007 new article self-nom by ~~~~

  • Please check back for comments on your nomination. Responding to reasonable objections will help ensure that your article is listed.
  • If you nominate someone else's article, you can use {{subst:DYKNom}} to notify them. Usage: {{subst:DYKNom|Article name|May 10}} Thanks, ~~~~

  • An unprecendented (?) fourfer nom, all four articles are new and about sites in the same small town of 800 people, this is to avoid topic/nominator stacking which is probably undesirable, especially for a village this side. I can, if needed, present individual hooks or some other combination of numbers of article hooks here. Each article has several photos, I will get around to posting some samples each building here when I get a shot. IvoShandor 01:47, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I changed "and" to "are" because the clause should be a complete sentence, including a verb, after "Did you know that". Art LaPella 02:39, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks, oversight on my part. IvoShandor 04:14, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have bolded Orangeville, Illinois too, while not new I expanded it five fold (see diff): Before: 1,495 characters without spaces, 1,809 characters with spaces, now: 7,753 characters without spaces, 9,273 characters with spaces. A fivefer!?! Its up to you guys and gals round here if you want to do this one this way or not. IvoShandor 04:14, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • There are five photos included, one of each building, and a general shot of Orangeville. I used thumbs so I could identify the images for DYK selectors easily, whoever picks will have to format the image properly for DYK, if one is used. As I said, there are others in the articles that can be used if you would prefer any of those. IvoShandor 16:40, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think you should stop this unprecedented fourfer stuff. --Mattisse 15:37, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(Unindent)I am sorry you don't like my work, as I said, I can split it into four separate nominations about the same 800 person village if you would like, but I figure this way leaves more slots open for more nominations. Whatever people prefer. IvoShandor 18:05, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's not that I don't like your work. It just seems like it puts a big burden on the DYK editors that could be looking at other, less experienced people's entries that might need the help more that you. --Mattisse 23:56, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And what of the multitude of nominations you have on the page, is not as much time occupied by the DYK editors screening those too? Pot, meet kettle. Come off it. IvoShandor 02:28, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sorry, IvoShandor. I apologize. I mistakenly thought I was helping by screening articles and improving hooks that were problematic, especially those noted by Art LaPella, but I will stop, since you see it in that light. Sorry! I will not rephrase the hooks of others any more Thanks for pointing that out. --Mattisse 15:01, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Your putting words in my mouth, you didn't suggest rephrasing, all you said was I think you should stop, "problematic" is an interesting way to phrase ArtLapella noting a grammar error he fixed. If I am going to spend the time writing five good hooks I want to know they will be used, this hasn't been the case in the past. When you approach someone with a standoffish attitude as you have expect reciprocation. If someone else has some concerns with this hook I would be happy to alter it. IvoShandor 23:42, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • On second thought, I am not changing the hook, as these are suggestions, no one is forced to pick them. Mattisse, I think you should lighten up. This is a volunteer effort, it is supposed to be fun, it's not like there is any lack of your nominations on this page, (gasp) even under the same day. IvoShandor 20:22, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Holy cow. Someone is complaining that you have put all your hooks into one DYK Ivo? Whats next? Complain that you would submit 5 seperate DYKs about the same small town. Oh wait, that would have happened also. Good work on the fiver, keep up the good work.--Kranar drogin 02:26, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Well, the link goes to the right article, but I piped it so people may understand better. And come on, the Supreme court and nipple pasties? Everyone is going to want to click on that. SWATJester Denny Crane. 15:42, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Well, I didn't realize someone else would nominate this. Actually, we can't use this hook since only the windows are covered in mesh. At least as far as I remember. Let's try:
The link to sweep is necessary since it is used twice in this hook, but it is not helpful in this case since it links to a generic page for the term. Andplus 09:27, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
How about link it as sweep#Sports? --Howard the Duck 11:45, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Or how about "...that despite winning all of their 14 elimination round games of the 2007 UAAP men's basketball tournament, the University of the East was still beaten by De La Salle University-Manila 2-0 in the finals series? " This is a tad longer though. --Howard the Duck 12:31, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • This also makes it easier for people who see the article later, after someone else has expanded it with another source, to discern what material came from what source. Otherwise you end up with a situation that makes it hard to determine the source, this becomes especially relevant if the sources aren't immediately available online. IvoShandor 11:18, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • You aren't suggesting littering the text with inline citation tags to point at the single reference, are you? BTW, Anonymous Dissident, the title is wrong. It should be Agathodaimon, not Agathodiamon . There is already an article at the correct name, some I've left it for somebody else to move. Undoubtedly there will be a policy for that sort of thing. Andplus 11:38, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I am not suggesting anything more than WP:V requires. Citing anything likely to be challenged, stats, etc. IvoShandor 16:34, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I bolded the new article but it isn't currently long enough for DYK, a minimum of 1,500 characters is required, this falls about 500 characters below that threshold. IvoShandor 09:34, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Unless I'm mistaken, there is no length requirement, merely a suggestion. But hey, whatever you guys decide. I just threw it out there. faithless (speak) 09:42, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I certainly am not trying to start any sort of argument or debate here, but the length is a suggestion, not a requirement.
