This article deals with the Austrian men's cup competition of the 2006/07 season. For the Austrian women's cup competition of the 2006/07 season, see Austrian Women's Football Cup 2006/07 .
The Austrian Football Cup was played for the 73rd time in the 2006/07 season. The official name of the competition was the “Stiegl Cup” for the fourth time in a row after the competition sponsor Stiegl.
A total of 60 amateur clubs from nine regional associations as well as the 22 professional clubs from the T-Mobile Bundesliga and the Red Zac First League took part in the 2006/07 season of the ÖFB-Pokal. The amateur clubs played 30 clubs in a preliminary round, which were drawn in the first main round to those 18 Bundesliga clubs that could not qualify for a European Cup competition in the previous season. The qualification criteria for participation in the preliminary round were regulated differently in the individual federal states. Each federal state allocated a predetermined contingent of starting places to clubs from the regional league and the respective highest national league . Individual regional associations made it possible for clubs from the lowest divisions to participate in this competition by awarding an ÖFB-Pokal place to the respective regional cup winner. For example, FC Hallein 04 from the 2. Landesliga Nord in Salzburg , which was founded only three years ago, was allowed to take part in the preliminary round of the ÖFB Cup for the first time as the surprise winner of last year's Salzburg State Cup. Fixed places were allocated exclusively to all clubs in the top two professional levels. A direct meeting of Bundesliga clubs is only possible from the third second main round. The four European Cup starters only take part in the competition from the round of 16.
In the first main round, the clubs of the T-Mobile Bundesliga and the Red Zac-Erste Liga entered the competition. Exceptions were the European Cup representatives who only take part in the cup competition from the round of 16.
For the Bundesliga clubs, the first main round was a pure fiasco. No fewer than four of the six Austrian top division clubs were eliminated in this early phase of the cup competition against lower-class clubs. On September 12, the crisis-ridden SK Sturm Graz lost against the regional league club from Kalsdorf near Graz and Wacker Tirol against the regional league club ASK Voitsberg each with 0: 1. The newly promoted SCR Altach lost to SV Feldkirchen from Carinthia 3: 4 on penalties . The next sensation was delivered one day later by Vienna from the third-class Regionalliga Ost with a 1-1 draw after extra time and a subsequent 4-3 win on penalties against the Austrian record champions Rapid Wien .
