history

Ancient finds from Amelia, Paolo Monti, 1907

In ancient times the city was called Ameria . It was considered a very old city and is said to have been 964 years before the Third Macedonian-Roman War , i.e. 1135 BC. BC, was founded. The name was derived from an alleged city founder Amirus. In historical tradition, however, it does not appear until the 1st century BC, with a few exceptions. When the Ameria-born Sextus Roscius was defended by Marcus Tullius Cicero against charges of parricide. As a municipality, Ameria was part of the Roman tribe Clustumina and mainly supplied agricultural products for the Roman market.

The diocese of Amelia had existed since the 5th century . Since 1973 it has been under the administration of the Bishop of Terni and Narni. In 1983 it was finally united with its official area to form the diocese of Terni-Narni-Amelia and thus lost its existence.

Parts of the ancient polygonal city wall , apparently from pre-Roman times, can still be seen in the modern city of Amelia.
