This list shows the most important alliances of the federal places with foreign powers, which were concluded in the Middle Ages / Early Modern Era, i.e. before the foundation of the Swiss federal state in 1848. The places involved (or estates / cantons) were composed differently, depending on the number of places with full rights and the specific interests of the respective individual place. Also facing cities were occasionally involved.
