Date ( jap. 伊達 市 , - shi ) is a city in the Iburi sub-prefecture on the island of Hokkaidō ( Japan ).

Date is about an hour or two south of Sapporo by car .

history
The community was founded in 1869 by samurai warriors of the Date clan ( Japanese 伊達 村 , - Date-mura ).
On August 1, 1925, it was raised to a small town ( Japanese 町 , - chō ), on April 1, 1972, it became a city ( Japanese 市 , - shi ).
The village of Otaki ( Japanese 大 滝 村 , - mura ) from Usu County ( Japanese 有 珠 郡 , - gun ) was incorporated into the city of Date on March 1, 2006.

The Datemombetsu Station is an express stop at the Muroran Main Line . The Iburi line to Kutchan was shut down in 1986. Date is accessible from the Chuo Expressway and National Roads 37, 276 and 453.
