The name Dart first appeared on Dodge models in the 1960 model year, where they named a new entry-level model that ranked below the large Dodge Matador and Dodge Polara models and added a cheaper car to the Dodge model range. All Dart models, with the exception of the station wagons, sat on a wheelbase that was 10 cm shorter than the Matador and Polara and also measured 10 cm less in length. These models are provided with self-supporting body have been offered as a four-door sedans and two (the latter with B-pillar or in Hardtop version), as a five-door station wagon, as a hardtop coupe and as a cabriolet . There was a choice of three equipment levels: Dart Seneca , Dart Pioneer and Dart Phoenix . The drive was taken over as standard by a 3.7-liter in-line six-cylinder (145 hp / 147 hp), on request there were V-8 engines with 5.2 to 6.3 liters displacement (230-325 hp / 233-329 hp) . The 1961 models received a facelift with a heavily modified front. A smaller 2.8-liter six-cylinder (101 hp / 102 hp) and a larger 6.8-liter V8 (350-375 hp / 355-380 hp) completed the engine range.

The new dart was an instant hit. In the 1960 model year, 306,603 copies of all Dart versions were produced, far more than the larger Matador and Polara models. In the following model year, however, sales fell to 137,000 copies, mainly because of an unfortunate facelift.

Model year 1962

Dodge Dart 1962

For 1962, Dodge, like its sister brand Plymouth , launched significantly reduced full-size models on a wheelbase of 295 instead of the last 300/310 centimeters. The darts, subdivided into the basic, Dart 330 and Dart 440 series, were the cheaper models. Technically, there were no notable differences, but the bodywork was completely new in style. Sales fell by about 8.1% to 111,300 darts.

From the 1963 model year, a new dart in the so-called “Compact” class replaced the previous Dodge Lancer . With the Valiant (wheelbase 269 cm), which was renewed at the same time, Plymouth offered a similar, but differently designed car.

The new Dart was available as a two- and four-door sedan, five-door station wagon, two-door hardtop coupé and as a convertible in the Dart 170, Dart 270 and Dart GT equipment lines. Six-cylinder engines with a displacement of 2.8 and 3.7 liters were available. From model year 1964 a 180 hp / 182 hp 4.5-liter V8 was added. In the fall of 1966, Dodge presented a dart with a completely new body using unchanged technology. The parallel model Plymouth Valiant was also renewed at this time, but again had a shorter wheelbase than the Dart (274 instead of 282 cm) and a different body. Station wagon and convertible were omitted, four-door sedan and two-door hardtop coupé remained in the range. The equipment variants Basis, Dart 270 and Dart GT were offered. In 1968 the decidedly sporty Dart GTS Coupé with a 275 hp / 279 hp 5.6 liter V8 moved to the top of the Dart model range. In 1969 the Dart 270 was replaced by the Dart Custom and the Swinger hardtop coupé, which was available with engines from 2.8 to 6.3 liters, was added to the range. In 1970 there was a major facelift with new front and rear sections; the GTS was no longer available and the Dart Swinger 340 now functioned as a muscle car variant.

In 1971, the Demon , a two-door coupé with a completely new body , appeared as an additional Dart variant on the shorter wheelbase of the Plymouth Valiant . His Plymouth parallel model was the Valiant Duster .

Dodge Dart Sport

In 1972 a total of 7 different models were offered under the names Demon, Dart, Dart Swinger and Dart Custom. In 1973 this number shrank to 6 and the Demon was renamed Dart Sport - conservative Christian circles had taken offense at the previous name ("Demon"). At the same time, the darts were given stronger front bumpers in accordance with US regulations. In 1974 the previous sports version, Dart Sport 340, was replaced by the Sport 360 with a slightly larger 5.9-liter V8 (170 hp / 172 hp). In 1974 the rear bumpers were also made more robust; The SE models with more extensive equipment were new. For the last model year of the Dart, 1976, the SE versions were omitted. The sport was also available in a version called "Lite" with aluminum parts; the 50 kg weight reduction should help reduce fuel consumption.

The successor to the long-lasting dart was the Dodge Aspen . In the Mexican market, the Dodge Aspen and its successor models were known as Dodge Darts until the 1980s.

The darts all over the world

The dart was produced in a more or less different form in a number of countries around the world, except in North America.

In Brazil , the Chrysler offshoot there manufactured from 1969 to 1983 variants based on the US Dart of 1969 as sedan and hardtop coupé under the names Dodge Dart (5.2-liter V8, 201 SAE-PS (148 kW) ), Dodge Charger (Coupé, 5.2 liters, 208 PS (153 kW)) and Dodge Charger R / T (Coupé, 5.2 liters, 218 PS (160 kW)), from 1974 the better equipped versions Gran Sedan and Gran Coupé and from 1978 Dodge Magnum and LeBaron.

In Argentina , Chrysler Fevre SAIC built Dart modifications from 1968 to 1979, also as a sedan and coupé, with the 3.7-liter six-cylinder or the 5.2-liter V8. These models ran under the names Dodge Valiant (3.7 liters, 139 SAE-PS (102 kW)), Dodge Coronado and Polara (disc brakes, 3.7 liters, 147 PS (108 kW)), Dodge GT (3.7 Liters, 157 PS (115 kW)), Dodge RT (Coupé, 3.7 liters, 165 PS (121 kW)) and Dodge GTX (Coupe, 5.2 liters, 215 PS (158 kW)).

Dodge 3700 GT from Spanish production

In Spain , the truck manufacturer Barreiros produced the 1963 Dart as a sedan and station wagon with a slightly different appearance from 1965 to 1971, and from 1969 also as a Dodge Diesel and Dart 3700 GT; a total of 17,589 copies were made of these models. From 1971 to 1977 Barreiros built a Dodge 3700 of the successor generation as a sedan under the names Dodge 3700, 3700 GT and 3700 GT Automatico, all powered by the 3.7-liter in-line six-cylinder with 165 SAE hp (121 kW). 9959 pieces of this series were manufactured in Spain.

In Switzerland , in the 1960s and 1970s, the VW, Porsche and Chrysler importer AMAG assembled some models of the Dart series, mostly by hand from CKD parts.
