The Regionalliga was the fourth highest league level in German ice hockey in the 2008/09 season . The regional leagues North, East, North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse, as well as the Baden-Württembergliga and the Bayernliga were played . A team from each of the six regional leagues was promoted to the 2009/10 Oberliga . The regional leagues of North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse as well as the Baden-Württembergliga played their promoted players in a joint promotion round to the upper league .

Regionalliga North

For the 2008/2009 season, the original North-East Regionalliga was split into the two non-interlinked North and East regional leagues. The athletic relegated EHC Salzgitter Steelers and the voluntary relegated REV Bremerhaven and EC Wedemark Farmers (all Association League North) have been eliminated . New in the Regionalliga Nord are the newly founded teams of the EC Hannover Pferdeturm and the Langenhagen Jets. The master can be promoted to the upper league 2009/10, the last one relegates to the Verbandsliga Nord.

Preliminary round

In the preliminary round, a double round is played. The top four teams take part in the championship round and the other teams take part in the relegation round.

The Wolves Braunlage are thus champions of the Regionalliga Nord 2009. For financial reasons and because the Oberliga-Gruppe Nord did not come into being, the Harzers waived their promotion.

Relegation round

The relegation round is played as a single round, with the last one being relegated to the Association League North.

Due to the increase in the league, Hamburger SV remained in the regional league, the amateurs of EHC Wolfsburg withdrew.

Regional League East

For the 2008/2009 season, the original North-East Regionalliga was split into the two non-interlinked North and East regional leagues. The Berliner SC, who want to register for the Sachsenliga, was eliminated in 2007. ERV 07 Chemnitz "Wild Boys" is new in the Regionalliga Ost as a newcomer from the Sachsenliga. The master can be promoted to the league 2009/10

The Preussen Berlin are thus champions of the Regionalliga Ost 2009. The Berliners decided not to move up to the top division due to the unresolved situation in the hall after the Germany hall was demolished .

Regionalliga North Rhine-Westphalia

Twelve teams take part in the Regionalliga NRW in 2008/09. The Herner EV rose to the upper league, the GSC Moers rose to the association league, the ESC Trier had already withdrawn its team during the preseason. Mosquitos Essen, Ratinger Ice Aliens and Herner EV 1b are new to the league. The clubs play a single round as a preliminary round. The first six teams then take part in the league promotion round, the remaining clubs play the regional league cup and stay in the regional league with the best teams in the association league.

NRW Cup round

NRW Cup winner was Lippe-Hockey Hamm. The cup round was played as a simple round with 56 games. Participants were the six relegated from the main round of the NRW Regionalliga and the two promoted Bergisch Gladbach and EHC Neuwied.

Regionalliga Hessen

The Regionalliga Hessen plays with six teams. After a single round, the best two teams are entitled to participate in the joint promotion round to the upper league, the remaining teams play a relegation round with the best teams in the regional league. New in the league is the promoted Eintracht Frankfurt for the relegated TSG Darmstadt.

The Regionalliga Hessen was merged with the Regionalliga NRW in 2009. However, only the Young Lions Frankfurt took part in the new Regionalliga West , the also qualified RSC Darmstadt started as well as the other, non-qualified clubs in the new Hessenliga .

Baden-Württemberg League

The eleven participants of the Baden-Württembergliga are divided into two groups in the preliminary round, in each of which a single round is played. The first two of each group then play in a further single round, the two participants in the joint promotion round to the upper league. The remaining nine teams play the Baden-Württemberg champions. In the main round four participants in the championship round with the remaining two teams in the qualifying round. With the Zweibrücken Hornets, a team from Rhineland-Palatinate also takes part in the league.

The best six teams of the RL NRW, as well as the best two clubs of the RL Hessen and the Baden-Württembergliga take part in the joint promotion round to the Oberliga. After the preliminary round, the best 4 teams qualified for the playoffs.

Ascent

The best-placed club from each of the three regional associations involved was able to move up to the league . The EHC Dortmund took advantage of the promotion, while the Young Lions Frankfurt and ESV Hügelsheim waived (Hügelsheim also had to file for bankruptcy in summer 2009).

Bayern League

The sixteen participants of the Bavarian Ice Hockey League (BEL) play the eight participants in the upper and lower intermediate round in a single round, divided into 2 groups of 4 teams. In the second round, the playoff semi-finalists and the playoffdown semi-finalists are played. For the relegated EV Fürstenfeldbruck and the EC Ulm / Neu-Ulm, which had withdrawn during the previous season, the ESV Buchloe and the EV Dingolfing rose. Analogous to the regulations in the DEL and the ESBG, the winner of a game receives three points in the BEL; in the event of a tie, a winner is determined in the penalty shoot-out, who then receives two points, the loser receives one point.

The teams of Wanderers Germering and ESV Königsbrunn are relegated to the Bavarian State League. The two teams will be replaced by the newly promoted EHC Bayreuth and EV Regensburg . With the relegation of TEV Miesbach from the Oberliga, the EHC 80 Nuremberg team is also relegated to the Landesliga.
