European Cup Winners' Cup (handball) 1978/79
The 1978/79 European Cup Winners' Cup was the fourth edition of the competition for European handball cup winners . The 26 participating teams qualified in their home countries through the national cup competition for the European Cup organized by the International Handball Federation (IHF) . The defending champion VfL Gummersbach was automatically qualified and was able to defend his title in the final against the East German representative SC Magdeburg (15:18, 15:11). The competition was overshadowed by Joachim Deckarm's tragic accident in the semi-final second leg in Tatabánya .

Semifinals
In the 23rd minute of the second leg between VfL Gummersbach and Tatabánya Bányász on March 30, 1979, the Gummersbach player Joachim Deckarm had a serious accident . In a counter- attack he collided with his Hungarian opponent Lajos Pánovics and fell to the ground. His head fell unchecked onto the concrete floor, which was only covered with a thin layer of PVC , resulting in a double fracture of the base of the skull , a tear in the meninges and severe bruises in the brain . Deckarm didn't wake up from the coma until 131 days later . Due to the brain damage, his motor skills were severely impaired, he had lost the ability to speak and has since been dependent on a wheelchair.
