This article covers the German national team at the 2017 European Women's Football Championship in the Netherlands . Germany took part in the finals for the ninth time and went into the tournament as defending champions, but failed in the quarter-finals.

qualification

Germany was drawn for qualification in group 5 and met Russia, Hungary , Croatia and Turkey . Germany started the qualification with a 12-0 home win against Hungary and remained clean in the other seven games they won and qualified as the second team for the finals on April 12, 2016. Then the German team won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , which ended the term of office of national coach Silvia Neid . Her successor Steffi Jones then started her tenure with two qualifying games. Although the German team scored the second most goals with 35 goals, no German player was able to place in the top 20 goalscorers. The best German goalscorer in qualification was Alexandra Popp with five goals. A total of 16 German players signed the list of goalscorers, making them the majority of all teams. The German team also benefited from two own goals by opposing players.

Squad

On June 2nd, Steffi Jones named a preliminary roster with 29 players. On June 30, Jones named the squad for the European Championship finals. Were deleted Pauline Bremer , Johanna Elsig , Alexandra Popp (scribe of the outer band in the left knee), Carina Schlüter , Lisa Schmitz and Lea Schüller .

Anna Paleness, Kristin Demann, Carolin Simon, Sara Doorsoun, Linda Dallmann and Hasret Kayikci are taking part in a major tournament for the first time.

preparation

After successfully qualifying, Germany played against Austria for the first time and then against hosts Netherlands and won both games 4-2. The international year ended with a 1-1 draw against Norway. In March 2017, participation in the SheBelieves Cup 2017 was on the program, where, as in the previous year, the opponents were the European champions England (1: 0) and France (0: 0) as well as world champions USA (0: 1). On April 9, the team played in Erfurt against Olympic third Canada , who had won 1-0 three days earlier against group opponents Sweden in the European Championship , and won 2-1. At the draw on November 8, 2016, Germany was assigned to Pot 1 with hosts Netherlands, France and England. Germany was drawn into group B and met Sweden in the first game of the only group without a European Championship newcomer , then meets Italy and qualifying opponents Russia . Against Sweden there were 19 wins and seven defeats in 26 games, but never a draw. The last time they met in the gold medal game at the Olympic Games, which Germany won 2-1. The last defeat against Sweden was on March 4, 2015 in the first game of the Algarve Cup 2015 when Germany lost 4-2 after leading 2-0, but won the game for 3rd place 2-1 a week later. The balance against the other two opponents is also positive: against the Russians there were 16 wins and two draws in 18 games, but no defeat, and against Italy in 26 games 14 wins, eight draws and four defeats. The last game between the two was the quarter-finals of the last European Championship, which Germany won 1-0. The last defeat against Italy was on March 14, 2007 in the game for 7th place in the Algarve Cup 2007 and was Steffi Jones's last international match.

Knockout round

Quarter finals

Germany and Denmark have met 21 times so far, two of them at the European Championship finals. The Germans won twelve games, four times they drew against each other and five games were lost. The last defeat against Denmark was on March 11, 2009 in the game for third place at the Algarve Cup 2009 . The last win against the Danes came a year later in the opening game of the Algarve Cup in 2010 . After that, there was only one game between the two of them at the Algarve Cup 2013 that ended goalless. Both teams won one of the two European Championship finals: the Danes in 1993 the game for third place, which was also the last defeat of the German team in the knockout round at an European Championship and the last game for third place, and the Germans the group game 1997.
