The Schleswig-Holstein Association League was held for the 32nd time in the 1978/79 season and formed the substructure of the third-class Oberliga Nord. The two first-placed teams were allowed to take part in the promotion round to the Oberliga Nord. The teams in the last two places had to relegate to the national league. Before the start of the season, the highest amateur league was renamed from the state league to the association league , while the second highest amateur league in Schleswig-Holstein was renamed the state league .

Compared to the 1977/78 season , the composition of the league changed as follows: 1. FC Phoenix Lübeck was promoted to the Oberliga Nord, while no team from Schleswig-Holstein was relegated from the Oberliga Nord. The two relegated members had left the association league and were replaced by the three promoted Eckernförder SV (re- promotion after 22 years), Eichholzer SV (re- promotion after three years) and FC Dornbreite (for the first time in the highest amateur league in Schleswig-Holstein).

Season course

The championship and participation in the promotion round was secured by NTSV Strand 08. VfR Neumünster was also allowed to take part in second place. Strand finished his group in last place, while Neumünster only had to admit defeat to Blumenthaler SV . FC Dornbreite and Eichholzer SV had to leave the association league after one season, SC Comet Kiel after nine years.
