The team Sunweb is a German cycling team based in the Dutch town of Deventer , which as a UCI World Team is licensed.
organization
The team was created in 2005 through the merger of the Japanese Shimano team with the Dutch bank giroloterij team . It was initially called Shimano-Memory Corp and is based in Deventer . Until the 2014 season, the team drove with a Dutch license.
The team is a member of the Mouvement Pour un Cyclisme Crédible (MPCC for short; German movement for credible cycling). Until 2010, this team also included a track cycling team.
On September 28, 2011, the manager Iwan Spekenbrink announced that the tool manufacturer Skil would end its commitment as the team's name sponsor, which it began in 2006, at the end of 2011. On March 30, 2012, the team announced the oil and gas company Argos Energies as the new main sponsor, who committed a budget for the next three years. Until then, the team had driven the first races of the 2012 season under the name Project 1t4i (Team Spirit, Inspiration, Integrity, Improvement, Innovation). With the new sponsor, the team applied for a ProTeam license for the UCI World Tour 2012 , but, as the 21st team in a ranking list, failed to meet the athletic qualification criteria. The team was granted a World Tour license for the 2013 to 2016 seasons.
After Argos announced that it would phase out its support for the team, the team should be supported by another main sponsor from 2014 onwards. When the latter also withdrew at the end of 2013, the team's new bike outfitter, Giant , took over the name sponsorship.
At the beginning of the 2015 season, the Bielefeld cosmetics producer Dr. Wolff Group Shimano as the second main sponsor. The team was renamed Team Giant-Alpecin in accordance with the Alpecin brand and received a German license.
The project also includes a women's cycling team that was registered as the UCI Women's Team under the name Skil 1t4i in 2012 , was now called Skil-Argos and in the 2014 seasons had the same name as the men's team. In 2015 the team was named Liv-Plantur .
In 2014, the project also included a junior team that was founded under the name Development Team Giant-Shimano . This team was hired at the end of the 2014 season after the operating company decided to no longer use a junior team for scouting , but rather through “talent days”.
In January 2016, the Germans John Degenkolb and Max Walscheid , the French Warren Barguil , the Dutch Ramon Sinkeldam , the American Chad Haga and the Swede Fredrik Ludvigsson were hit by a car at the training camp in the Spanish province of Alicante . The accident was caused by a 73-year-old British woman who drove on the wrong side of her SUV. Some of the drivers suffered very serious injuries.
The tour operator Sunweb became the new name sponsor in 2017 . In the same year the Sunweb Development Team was founded as a farm team and registered as the UCI Continental Team .
At the end of April 2018, it was announced that, in contrast to the limited-term sponsorship contracts most commonly found in cycling , Sunweb had switched to supporting the team on an unlimited basis with two years' notice at the end of the season.
reception
The team, then called Team Argos-Shimano , is honored in the documentary film Neue Helden - im Herzen der Tour (Nieuwe Helden - In het Hart van de Tour / Clean Spirit - In the Heart of the Tour) by the Dutch filmmaker Dirk Jan Roeleven . The film, which was shot during the Tour de France 2013 , mainly shows the sprinters Marcel Kittel and John Degenkolb as well as their helper Tom Veelers , who fell badly in the finish sprint of the 10th stage after contact with Mark Cavendish . The documentation also deals with the goal mentioned by the team management of being successful without doping .
