About this picture

Großenkneten is a municipality in the Oldenburg district in Lower Saxony .

geography

location

The community of Großenkneten lies between the rivers Hunte and Lethe and is physiogeographically assigned to the Cloppenburger Geest . The village is located in the Wildeshauser Geest Nature Park and consists, among other things, of the districts of Ahlhorn , Huntlosen , Sage , Döhlen and the village of Großenkneten itself. Großenkneten has a strong agricultural character and is increasingly being chosen as a place of residence by commuters (especially to Oldenburg ).

Due to the large forest areas in its vicinity, Ahlhorn is the seat of a Lower Saxony Forestry Office, which is not only responsible for large parts of the Oldenburg district, but also for forests in the Oldenburger Münsterland , which in the west and south in the form of the Cloppenburg and Vechta districts to the municipality Grossenkneten is adjacent. Set in a vast wooded area Ahlhorner fish ponds whose shores and the cattails (also fools piston , Lampenputzer called clubbing) have a home, as well as numerous scattered throughout the municipality megalithic monuments are worth seeing. What is striking is the relatively large number of preserved sheep pens (i.e. sheep stalls) in the area of the municipality of Großenkneten, where sheep farming used to play a major role on the heather .

Community structure

Großenkneten consists of 19 districts (places of residence): Ahlhorn (8.503), Amelhausen (110), Bakenhus (51), Bissel (298), Döhlen (489), Großenkneten (3.017), Hagel (31), Halenhorst (240), Haschenbrok (87), Hengstlage (144), Hespenbusch -Pallast (74), Hosüne (588), Huntlosen (1,904), Husum (58), Sage (626), Sage-Haast (288), Sannum (205), Steinloge ( 119) and western rite (95). history

Evangelical Lutheran St. Mary's Church in Grossenkneten

The area of today's community of Großenkneten was already settled at the time of the Neolithic (4800–2000 BC). From this time so-called hune graves of the funnel cup culture have been preserved in the municipality . Mention should be made, for example, of the large stone grave Bakenhus between Ahlhorn and Großenkneten, the hill grave Huntlosen southeast of Huntlosen, the large stone grave Wittenhöge west of Huntlosen and the burial mound field Hespenbusch east of Großenkneten. Other barrows were either destroyed or are on private property.

After Charlemagne (* probably April 2, 747 or 748; † January 28, 814 in Aachen) from 780 AD onwards nine mission districts for the Christianization of the subject Saxons were established, Abbot Gerbert Castus from the Visbek mission cell founded the first parishes in the area. These counted in Lerigau the parish Großenkneten.

The places like Großenkneten, Huntlosen, Döhlen and Sage were mentioned in documents as early as the 9th century . In 1933 the former community of Huntlosen was incorporated into the community of Großenkneten. This gives Großenkneten its current size.

The Lethe estate was built around 1400, the lands of which extend on both sides of the Lethe , so in part also to the area of the municipality of Emstek in the district of Cloppenburg . The manor house was initially placed on the left bank of Lethe, but was rebuilt around 1900 on the right bank (Ahlhorner).

During the First World War , one of the largest military airship ports was set up for the Imperial Navy from 1916 in the area of what is now the Ahlhorn district . On the airship port Ahlhorn there were six large airship hangars that were partially destroyed in January 1918, when a gas explosion. The area of the former airship port was used for military purposes until 2006. After the Second World War , a British cemetery of honor for those who died in the war from Commonwealth countries, the Sage War Cemetery , was established in the district of Sage .

On the Buhlertsberg in the center of the Ahlhorn fish ponds stands the Ahlhorn blockhouse, a Protestant youth home since 1946 . Construction began in 1934, in 1937 it was expanded into a Gau comradeship home and in 1945 it was even used as a prison camp for the British Army . In 1946 the log house was taken over by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oldenburg . Since then, it has primarily been run as a meeting place for young people. However, in recent years the facility has increasingly opened up to informal groups and individual travelers.

The “Ahlhorner Jugendwaldheim” (JWH), an extracurricular location for environmental education, is located near the log cabin between several Ahlhorn ponds. Initially renamed as “Ahlhorn Forest Education Center”, it has been operating as “Forest Education Center Weser-Ems” (WPZ Weser-Ems) since July 1, 2016.

Between 1952 and 1957 Karl Poggensee and the DAFRA (= German Association for Rocket Affairs) founded by him operated a launch site for small test rockets with a summit height of a few kilometers near the Hespenbusch homestead . In 1957 the available area became too small and the start-up activities were relocated to Cuxhaven .

Natural gas processing plant

One of the world's largest, most modern and most environmentally friendly natural gas processing plants is located in the Sage district. Here the sour gas , which occurs frequently in northern Germany, is cleaned by removing the hydrogen sulfide . It is operated by Exxon Mobil .

At the beginning of the 1980s the place became known nationwide when the local music group Trio printed their private address in the Regent settlement in Großenkneten on their first long-playing record (see illustration below). In 1997 the Oldenburg-Ostfriesische Wasserverband (OOWV) bought the organic farm in Bakenhus. Here, possibilities for ground and drinking water protection are researched, applied and groups of visitors communicated. The Bakenhus organic farm cultivates approx. 130 hectares of pasture or grassland in the Großenkneten water protection area and grows cereals on approx. 60 hectares. The approx. 200 cattle of the Aberdeen Angus breed on the grounds of the organic farm are worth seeing.

Origin of name

Old names of the place are (kneading): 890 Gnettum, (large kneading): around 1000 Gnidon and around 1000 Gnydun, (small kneading): around 1000 Gnidun, around 1150 kneading, 1160 aput knitting, 1189–1205 kneading, 1247 kneading and 1417 large kneading . Grossenkneten is a very difficult place name to interpret; both places lie in a valley, a cut, in a depression. Therefore, the name is one of an old word root that is probably no longer attested in the Germanic languages, but in the Slavic: "gneid (h) - / gnoid (h) -" belongs to "gnětiti" and means "to press, squeezing, pressing ”; a distant relationship exists to "knead".

Fragment "Bissel" from the Oldenburg meteorite (1930)

Meteorite impact in Bissel

On September 10, 1930 at 2:15 p.m., a meteorite struck the Bissel district . It is part of the “Oldenburg” meteorite , which broke up about 4 km above the village of Döhlen into at least two main parts, which fell in Bissel and Beverbruch ( Garrel municipality ). The fragment 'Bissel' with a weight of 4.84 kg was kept in the museum village of Cloppenburg . It was last seen in 2000 as a loan in an exhibition at the Oldenburg State Museum. In 2012 it could not be found in either Oldenburg or Cloppenburg and has since been considered lost.

coat of arms

The municipal coat of arms of the municipality Großenkneten in 1948 by the Lower Saxony Ministry of the Interior awarded. The drawing of the coat of arms comes from the heraldist Manfred Furchert .

Great kneading coat of arms
Blazon : Divided by blue and gold ; above a golden sheaf of grain , each accompanied by a floating, upright, mutilated silver branch ; below a red stone grave . "
Justification of the coat of arms: Manfred Furchert writes about this in his book:

“The coat of arms refers to the megalithic graves near Engelmannsbäke as evidence of prehistoric settlement. In the upper half of the shield, the sawn off and trimmed trunks and the sheaf signify the transformation of forest and heather into rich arable land. At the same time, the tree trunks point to the coat of arms of the Dorgeloh family , who founded Gut Lethe and sat in the Münster castle there for centuries . The sheaf was also featured in the coat of arms of Count von Wasaburg , the illegitimate son (= Gustav Gustavson ) of King Gustav Adolf of Sweden , who bought the Huntlosen estate in 1650 and built a castle. The main colors blue, gold and red are reminiscent of the Oldenburg coat of arms. "

Partner communities

traffic

The community is connected to the Oldenburg – Osnabrück railway via the Huntlosen, Großenkneten and Ahlhorn stations . The stations are served by the RE 18 (Wilhelmshaven - Osnabrück). The Ahlhorn signal box is to be observed as a monument .

In the west of the municipality runs the federal highway 29 , which also connects Osnabrück with Oldenburg. The center of Ahlhorn has been significantly less polluted by road traffic since then

  • the former federal highway 69 was demoted to the state road as part of the construction of the A 29 and
  • the former federal road 213 between the Ahlhorn junction of the A 29 and the Wildeshausen-West junction of the federal motorway 1 was downgraded to a municipal road and at the same time international and national road traffic was diverted via the Cloppenburg junction of the A 1.
