history

Until the 19th century

Hofkirchen was first mentioned in a document on November 5, 1005. Around 1200 it came into the possession of the Bishops of Passau, who left it to the Wessenbergers. After their extinction in 1240, Rapoto III. von Ortenburg the village, but gave it back to the bishop on February 19, 1241 and presumably took it as a fief . After his death in 1248, the Wittelsbach family received the advocacy, in 1256 the fief and in 1262 by comparison the rule over Hofkirchen. The place was already known as a market before 1300, but it was not until 1387 that Duke Albrecht II granted it the right to hold a weekly market on all Mondays. In 1421 Hofkirchen was pledged for the first time together with Hilgartsberg to a Bavarian compatriot, but has since become a ducal market again and received further rights. Towards the end of the 15th century, the Weißenfelder were enfeoffed with Hilgartsberg and Hofkirchen. As a result, conflicts arose over the position of the Hofkirchen market, as it had its own magistrate rights. The situation only calmed down when the Fuggers took over Hilgartsberg in 1626.

Today's parish church was built with the help of the nobles von Puchberg and other benefactors and consecrated in 1498. On October 18, 1745, Emperor Franz I's ornate ship docked in Hofkirchen, and the monarch and his entourage moved into overnight quarters in what is now the Buchner inn. The Kaiserstraße still reminds of this day. In Hofkirchen there was also a castle built at the beginning of the 15th century, which was acquired by the market town and demolished at the beginning of the 19th century.

The formation of the community

At the time of the Electorate of Bavaria, the Hofkirchen market belonged to the Straubing Rent Office and the Hengersberg Regional Court . In the course of his extensive administrative reforms, Minister Montgelas had the kb Graflich Fuggerische Patrimonialgericht Hilgartsberg built in the Kingdom of Bavaria, which had existed since 1806 . In 1821 Joseph Eligius Graf Fugger zu Glött sold this to the Bavarian state. The last remnants of aristocratic rule over the Hofkirchen community, formed in 1818 by the Bavarian community edict, had thus expired. With the start of Danube steam navigation in 1837 and the opening of the Straubing – Passau railway line on the other bank of the Danube in 1862, the Hofkirchen market lost its importance. A new source of income was found in the cultivation of the Weber card , which the haulier Josef Reischer (1775–1850) brought to Hofkirchen, where it thrived.
