Honda N600 (1970)

The Honda N600 is a small car from the car manufacturer Honda , based on the N360 with a smaller engine and classified as a K-Car in Japan . After the S800 , the N360 was the second and the N600 the third model from Honda in Germany.

The engine with the overhead camshaft sits in the middle directly behind the front grille, the transmission behind it. The front wheels are individually suspended from MacPherson struts and wishbones , while the rear has a rigid axle on leaf springs .

history

The N360 (type code N360 and product code 567) was built from 1966 to 1969 and sold in Germany from 1968 to 1969 in a number of around 1000. The front-wheel drive two-door sedan had a wind-cooled two-cylinder engine with 354 cm³ and 20 kW. He was TN360 (TN360 type code and the product code 512) derived as a pickup truck with 22 kW at 8000 min -1 but was only sold in Japan. In France and Belgium there was the N400 (type code N400 and the product code 593) 401 cm³ and 21 kW, always in "deluxe" equipment (bumper horns, trim, wood imitation dashboard and differently patterned seats). The N500 was never for sale , it was just a pre-production model of the N600. With 497.1 cm³ it should produce around 29 kW. A kind of " combi " version, the LN360 (type code LN360 and product code 584) was built as an extension.

The LN360M was a "luxury model" with more accessories, including a radio with medium and long wave reception with five channel station buttons in the middle of the dashboard. The telescopic antenna was installed in the left B-pillar. Driver and front passenger comfort seats were foldable as reclining seats, and there were better padded interior panels. An M emblem was on the lower part of the two-part tailgate and on the two front fenders. The additional price was 40,000 yen and thus you had a price advantage of 15,170 yen.

Around 1970, the Honda Z (type code Z360 and product code 605) emerged from the N360 and the Honda Life in 1971 . In addition to the 2- and 4-door version, Life also had a van ( Stepvan ) and a pick-up . However, these cars did not find their way to Germany, because the Honda Civic was in development and came onto the European market in 1972.

The N600 (type code N600 and product code 568) was offered between 1967 and 1973 as a front-wheel drive two-door sedan and a more powerful variant of the N360 . It had a wind / fan-cooled two-cylinder in-line engine that was offered with 31 kW until around 1970. In Japan the N600 E was sold with 43 hp. There were numerous different versions of this type of car around the world, such as the Touring / G / GT / GTL / E / Town and AT (automatic) of the N600. Of the N600 G there were only 1000 pieces in Germany and they were all yellow. They also had a tachometer, a separate fuel gauge and a glove box lid in the wood-veneered dashboard. There was also a leather steering wheel, sports bikes and front disc brakes.

At the same time, the vehicle was also offered as a coupé under the name Honda Z (USA and Hawaii). From around 1970 the N600 was offered with only 28 kW for insurance and emissions reasons. The USA version has a modified camshaft and an output of 26 kW. The modified front axle was now equipped with a stabilizer (as with the Z600). In the throttled version in Germany for owners of the old class 4 driver's license, one cylinder was shut down, but mostly the displacement was throttled by reducing the bore (smaller cylinder liners) to 250 cm³ or by shortening the stroke (crank pin moved in the crankshaft and connecting rods compressed ). The engine was then fitted with the cylinder and cylinder head of the N360.

In Germany there should only be around 50 roadworthy N600s, even fewer of the N360s.

The Honda N800 prototype , with a weaker engine from the S800 , was presented as a possible sedan at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 1965 , but it was not produced in this form.
