The teams in places three to six of the championship round , as well as the winner of the relegation round , reached the playoffs. In the knockout system , a participant in the first qualifying round for the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League was determined. With third-placed Glenavon FC already qualified as cup winners for the UEFA Europa League, four teams remained. Accordingly, the playoff will be played over two rounds, with fourth-placed Cliftonville FC getting a bye.
Eleven-placed, Ballinamallard United , faced the runner-up in the 2015/16 NIFL Championship , Institute FC , on two home and away games that were to be played on May 6 and 10. On May 9, 2016, the NIFL Premiership Fixtures Sub Committee postponed the second leg.
