James A. O'Leary

James Aloysius O'Leary (born April 23, 1889 in New Brighton , New York , † March 16, 1944 in West New Brighton , New York) was an American politician . Between 1935 and 1944 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives . Congressman Vito John Fossella junior is his great-grandson.

Career

James Aloysius O'Leary attended St. Peter's Academy , Augustinian Academy, and Westerleigh Collegiate Institute , all on Staten Island . While doing real estate and insurance businesses, he studied law . He started working for the North Shore Ice Co. in 1917 . Between 1920 and 1934 he worked there as general manager and vice president. He also held offices in numerous other Staten Island companies. In 1930 he ran unsuccessfully for nomination to the New York Senate . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the congressional elections of 1934 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eleventh constituency of New York , where he succeeded Anning Smith Prall after January 4, 1935 . He was re-elected four times in a row but died during his final term on March 16, 1944 in West New Brighton. His body was buried in St. Peter's Cemetery . As a Congressman, he chaired the Committee on Expenditures in the Executive Departments ( 76th to 78th Congress ).
