Pustertalbahn to Franzensfeste

The Drautalbahn - as this railway line is called today - is an east-west railway connection along the Drau . It extends from Maribor (Marburg a. D. Drau, connection to the old Südbahn ) to Innichen , where it merges with the Pustertalbahn to Franzensfeste . It begins in northern Slovenia , crosses Carinthia and East Tyrol and ends in South Tyrol . The section of the course Klagenfurt - Bleiburg is as part of Koralmbahn expanded that from Bleiburg the Jauntalbahn follows. This section of the line, like the rest of the route in Slovenia, is single-track and not electrified.

history

Today's Drautalbahn consists of the Carinthian Railway (Marburg– Villach ), the original Drautalbahn (Villach– Lienz ) and the eastern part of the original Pustertalbahn (which extended from Lienz to Franzensfeste ). It received its current name as a result of the division of the Pustertal route into an Austrian and an Italian part after 1918.

Carinthian Railway

The Carinthian Railway was built as a wing line by the kk priv. Südbahngesellschaft and extended from Marburg to Villach.

The original concession (1856: Marburg – Villach– Brixen with a branch Villach– Görz ) was held by an AG which, however, could not raise the building capital for this large project. It stayed with the "Klagenfurt groundbreaking" in 1857.

This concession then went to the Creditanstalt , which partly (Marburg-Villach) passed it on to the kk priv. Südbahngesellschaft . The remaining projects were dropped for the time being. The section from Marburg to Klagenfurt was opened on June 1, 1863. On May 30, 1864, the line was opened to Villach.

In the 1960s, the line between Klagenfurt and Villach was electrified and double-tracked.

Old Drautalbahn; Pustertalbahn

A sequel was not initially considered. It was only because of political and strategic considerations that the decision was made later to also build a connection from Villach via Lienz to Franzensfeste in order to connect the southern railway with the Brenner railway . This took place with the installation of the old Drautalbahn and the Pustertalbahn , both of which were opened on November 20, 1871. The Villach – Franzensfeste project was established with financial support from the state.

Reorientation after 1918

After the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy , the route suddenly lay in three different states and thus lost its historical unity. With the division of the Pustertalbahn, its Austrian route was merged with the old Drautalbahn and the Carinthian Railway to form the current Drautalbahn , while the Italian Pustertalbahn kept its name. The Austrian section is still kilometers from Marburg. Between the junction of the Rosentalbahn in Klagenfurt and the junction of the Rudolfsbahn towards Tarvisio in Villach, it became part of the new southern route.

Since the branch of the Lavant Valley Railway was in Unterdrauburg , Slovenia , trains between the Lavant Valley and Klagenfurt had to have a corridor until the newly built Jauntal Railway closed the gap inland in the 1960s.

Railcar 813.018 in Bleiburg

Current traffic and vehicle use

In the Slovenian section, the Slovenske železnice trains run from Monday to Friday. There is comparatively heavy traffic between Maribor and Ruše . Three pairs of trains run as far as Bleiburg . Some trains only run to Prevalje . Very few regional trains run on weekends in the summer months. Mostly used are railcars of the SZ813 / 814 series, which were built between 1973 and 1976 by Fiat Ferroviaria and TVT Maribor .

From Bleiburg , trains coming from Wolfsberg in particular use the route to continue to Klagenfurt main station . Push-pull trains are used together with the 2016 series or diesel multiple units of the 5022 series .

In the Klagenfurt - Spittal an der Drau section , ÖBB long-distance trains also operate on the Vienna - Villach , Vienna - Lienz and Klagenfurt - Salzburg routes . These RJ, EC, IC or EN are pulled or pushed by class 1144 , 1116 and 1216 locomotives. In the section with electrically operated traction, modern railcars of the 4024 series are also used as REX, R or S-Bahn trains.

Until the 2013/14 timetable change, there were two daily ÖBB direct connections from Lienz to Innsbruck , which were run as corridor trains over the Pustertal and Brenner Railway and were hauled by class 1216 locomotives.

Since the 2014/15 timetable change, fourteen SAD local transport FLIRT trains have been running every hour from Lienz to Franzensfeste , with the option (s) to change to Innsbruck or Bolzano . The six-part ETR170 are equipped for operation under 3 kV direct current (IT) and 15 kV / 16.7 Hz alternating current (AT).
