Kamenka ( Russian Каменка ) is an urban-type settlement in northwestern Russia . The place belongs to the Arkhangelsk Oblast and has 2582 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). He is in the Mesenski rajon .

geography

Kamenka is located about 222 kilometers northeast of the Oblast capital Arkhangelsk . It is located on the left bank of the 966 km long Mesen River, about 30 km from its confluence with the Mesen bosom of the White Sea . The nearest town is Mesen, which is also the administrative center of the Rajon and is about 5 kilometers east of Kamenka on the other side of the river. The Kamenka river of the same name runs through the settlement , which flows into the Mesen near the city and after which the settlement is named.

history

The current settlement of Kamenka was established in 1892 when the Ruschnikow brothers built a sawmill at the mouth of the Kamenka in the Mesen . The processed wood was mainly shipped abroad via the seaport. At the end of the 1920s there were already two sawmills in the settlement, which were replaced by the larger Mesenski sawmill number 48 ( Мезенский (№ 48) ).

With the dissolution of the Arkhangelsk Governorate in 1929, the place became part of the newly founded Mesenski rajon . In 1938 Kamenka received urban-type settlement status .

Economy and Transport

The most important industry in Kamenka is the forest and wood industry.

Kamenka has a seaport from which there is a connection to the city of Mesen. Neither Kamenka nor the nearby city of Mesen have a rail link. From Mesen there is a regular bus connection to the city of Arkhangelsk from December to March and from July to November. There is also a year-round flight connection from Mesen Airport to Arkhangelsk.
